    Recommendation on trolling motor batteries

    Hi guys,

I've been running AGMs for my cranking battery (PM1 or other private label equivalents), but haven't given much thought to my TM batteries and have been used standard Interstate 29 series lead.

I just got a new 521c with the jump switch which allows you to switch to battery 2 for the cranking battery for the day, if something catastrophic like a bad cell nuked the cranking battery during the day(I've had this happen once in a T)

My optimax calls for a minimum of 800 CCA, and the interstate 29s are only 675 so would be a little light solo on the engine.

Do any of you guys have a recommendation on TM batteries, AGM or otherwise that have at least 800CCA?

    Thanks!!!

Is that the one in the $180 range?

Might consider also the Odyssey battery line to obtain that many CCAs with good reserve capacity for the trolling motor.

Those are great batteries, they are manufactured by Deka.

. Yep, that is my suggestion. They also have a wet battery that is $94 with very good specs. Both are made by DEKA.

Hi Lou - I have the 2150 for my cranking, which would you recommend for the trolling motor? (are they as heavy? lol)

    Thanks!

I'm running the Sam's Duracell wet cells. Group 31 (29) are $95 a piece. Works for me!

But yes, you can't beat the Duracell AGMs if you want to go that route. As was mentioned, all the Duracell branded batteries are made by East Penn (Deka). You just missed a sale on those where they were running right around $140, but even at $180 it's a great deal. I believe the ones that have a sticker that says "Deka" are at least $50 more.

Just to give you an additional option, I mentioned considering the Odysseys as there are not that many choices from manufacturers when such high CCAs are required and as well high reserve capacity is desired. For trolling motor batteries, I should probably not have mentioned Odysseys as though the Odysseys are powerful able to deliver a full 80% of their capacity, they have a need for Odyssey approved high amp rate chargers which is not easy for boaters to provide for the larger capacity models most suitable for trolling motors. I charge mine at 40 amps minimum when they become > 50% discharged which is not a straightforward setup.
