Wanting to add surge brakes to my boat trailer.

Need some recommendations please. I need to add surge brakes to a new boat trailer. I did not order the brakes with the trailer opting to get the boat then decide if I really needed them. Trailer came with the brake flanges on the axle so now the questions are:
    1. buy a kit or individual components? Which manufacturers to buy or avoid?
    2. Disk or drum brakes.
    3. self install or pay someone to do it.

Single axle trailer used in fresh water only with a total package weight around 3000lbs.

I am pretty good mechanically so the idea of adding the brakes doesn't bother me as long as I get started with the right components.

    Thanks for you help.

See if the trailer manufacture has a kit available.
Disk breaks, they don't trap as much moisture.
If your mechanically inclined install them your self.

Break kits are easy to find, problem will be finding an actuator that will fit.

I installed the Titan disc kit with swing away actuator. It was like $500 on etrailer.com. Very easy install, just swapped my standard swing tongue for the actuator, ran the lines, rotors and calipers mounted right up, bled system and rocked on.

If you have a swing tongue it makes it much easier to install.
