    Anyone ever ran a older 201 with a 150hp?

Hi, motor blew on my 1996 201 pro. Gonna buy a newer boat. But my buddy wants to buy my hull and trailer and out his xr4 mercury 150hp on it. Has anyone ever ran a 150 on this boat. I figure it should run low 50s. But would like to know some feedback from others. Thanks

Everything I have ever seen on this subject points to that boat being underpowered with a 150.

I had a 1989 201Pro with a 1990 150HP Evinrude. It was before GPS but it did the job and I'd say in the 50MPH range. Ran well with a 3 blade 22P Michigan wheel Raker copy. It is what it is but yes it will do the job.

A friend of mine had the same boat as mine and had a 175 Intruder on it and it performed very well and would run upper 50s. I wouldn't think 25hp would make to much of a difference except when trying to plane out.

Back in the day when that boat was new BASS had a maximum horsepower rule of 150. Some of the guys opted for the 20 foot boat with the 150 and were happy with it. I don't remember the exact year they changed to 250HP max but it was around that time.

I had a 1990 201 with a Johnson GT 150 running a 25 shooter. Boat would run middle 50's when new. Great boat and the reason for the 150 was the BASS rules at the me. Great boat that I had for 24 years.

You mean, like this? Mine will run upper 50's all day long, jumps on plane, and handles great with a 4-blade prop. I don't feel underpowered at all with my 150.

I would run a 4 blade prop that doesn't lug your motor. Lots of slip to avoid trashing motor but no reason not to run and fish man. Good luck

I have a 96 running an older Evinrude XP150. I only get about 40 out of it. I don't think I have the right prop on it. The 96 201 is a heavy boat. A 150 will get you around but not going to be a speed demon.

you need to have a tach...to properly prop a boat. Either your boat is waterlogged....motor is running on low compression...or you are woefully overpropped.
