    1995 Viper 188D

Is it feasible that some boats setup need to be lower than the standard 3 to 3 1/2 prop to pad? I hit 6400RPM at WOT and backed out immediately. I am at 3 1/2 but I can't lower my motor until I install my new jack plate and Hydralic Steering.
    Thanks for any suggestions

3 1/2 is typically just a good starting point, but if you're hitting that many RPM, you either have a bad tach, or not enough prop. My Cobra is at 3 1/2 with a 6" jack plate and a 25 pitch Trophy and is just about perfect there.

So what was your speed at 6400 ? Unless you were flying, your tach is likely off. I would check the transom very well, especially if it has any wood in it,before I would use a 10" plate. It might very well be too much stress. But in answer to your question, yes, some boats like a deeper prop to pad.

The old tach is probably off.

I will try a new tach and see what that does. At the very least it will eliminate one variable
