Did you install new thermostats or even install them after assembling? High idle kicks off at 105* F so if the block isn't getting up to temp then you may encounter this.
new thermostats installed try the old one today same result when you fist start it runs normal for about 3 sec then jumps up to 2000 seen 3000 today any ideas
Disconnect the throttle cable at the motor, start it cold then check the head temps with a IR temp gun.
thank you not so sure its a temperature problem now really erratic rpm changes checked power pack for a pinched wires going to pull lower cowls and check connections and wires is it possible I have a bad power pack on install thought I heard a crack looked it over did not see any damage
May want to check for correct top dead center on #1. You may have sheared off the woodruff key on the crankshaft.
just checked #1 TDC on the flywheel at a loss now close to buys a power pack must have done some damage on install heard it sound like it cracked when tightening bolts and nuts pulled it off didn't look damaged thanks again for the help
Check your High Tension wires from the pack to the coils. Orange/blue #1/#2 coils, Orange # 3/4 coils. Orange green #5/6 coils.
they are on and in good shape will that make the rpm run high and fluctuate seeing anywhere from 1500 to almost 3000
think maybe crankcase seal ? think spray some carb cleaner along the seam

thanks guys was wondering if bad gas could cause these problems ?
Possible but unlikely. Did you do the rebuild or a rebuilder?
rebuilt myself first one
GelSeal on the crank case halves? Permatex Black on the threads for the bolts for the intake to the crank case front side? Rubber cap on the upper intake port? GelSeal on the upper bearing seat?
yep followed the book to the T thanks for everyones help found to be bad gas runs great now
Is your high idle on a garden hose or with the boat in the water?
