    What is this?

I just got a used boat i love the boat but i want to know what is this on the bottom of my hull? The dealer said it was something some boaters put on the bottom of the boat if they leave it in the water for along time. He said it only lasts for a few years then it would start to chip and flake off. Im not too sure about that if its going to only last for few years why would put a keel guard on top of it.

    Could be Antifouling paint
It is a sacrificial layer that wears off to impede the growth of barnacles, algae, and marine organisms.

From the pic it looks like it was sprayed right over the keel guard.
Yes, it has a useful life span. Sometimes it chip or peels, sometimes it just fades/wears off and exposes whatever is under it.

Can cost a few MPH as the surface is typically rough.
Also adds weight as it is applied in multiple layers.

Can be removed by sanding/grinding/soda blasting.
The under surface will need to be repaired once removed.

Was your boat ever registered in the South? Hard to tell, but it kind of looks like "Gorilla Hull" treatment. If it is, that's a good thing. I believe the company that does the installation is at Toledo Bend.

If it's from Texas then more than likely it's Gorilla Hull. Search this board or Google it, and you will see what you have. Positives include hull blister prevention and protection from stumps. Negative is you may lose a mile or two on top end speed. For a new boater especially, I'd take the hull protection every time.
