Kayak Bass Fishing National Championship and Open on Kentucky Lake (3/31 and 4/1)

I'll be headed down to Kentucky Lake next week to fish the National Championship and Open event on Kentucky Lake. Any of you going to be down there as well? The Open is available to anyone so you can come down and fish it if your interested. Guaranteed 10,000 for first place plus sponsor incentives. The National Championship prize is 35,000 for first this year plus sponsor incentives...pretty amazing for a kayak fishing tournament! In 2018 they are guaranteeing 100,000 for first place! Have to get qualified to go though...and there are plenty of opportunities to do so.

I live about 2 hours away and having a new Outback delivered there. Actually qualified for the '18 NC by winning a tournament last Saturday.

That's awesome man! I really wanted to get out more for that online event but had to much to do to get prepped for the championship next week. Did stick a nice 19 inch fish on Sunday for it but never submitted it.

Well, it was a daunting tournament but did pretty well in both the open and the championship. Placed 33rd/339 in the open and 40th/362 in the championship. One more good fish and it would have put me up there. Qualified for 2018 in the process as well :)

Hope to see some of you guys in 2018...it was a great event...had to be close to $100,000 in cash and prizes given out for the two events this weekend.

When I was down on Tuesday I ended up meeting the guy that eventually won it. Funny sitting there talking to him and 3 other guys that finished in the top 30.

Was sad I wasn't fishing, there was definitely some excitement in the air.

It's definitely a cool event to be a part of. Probably the single largest gathering of kayak bass anglers to date. A couple more better fish would have put me in striking distance...but hey, I am happy where I ended up. Get to do it again in 2018!

Do you Hobie guys like the Outback better than the PA's?

Also, great that yakking has gotten this huge!

The PA is massive. It's a great fishing platform but loading it and unloading it is something to take into consideration. It's also slower than the Outback, but it is more stable to stand in, and has a higher weight capacity. It really comes down to personal preference.

Question on the tournament - do you have to travel pretty far by paddling or peddling to get to a spot? I was wondering if physical endurance also plays a part in this type of tournament.

    What was the winning weight?

Is it the best 5, or do you turn in all of your catches?

Is cheating a problem in those tournaments?

Doesn't go by weight, it goes by length. It was a two day tournament with 5 fish per day. I believe the winning length was 188.75 roughly...so almost a 19 inch average.

There is always a chance for cheating but the KBF has worked tirelessly to prevent it as much as possible. To date I don't know of any cheating...and I joined up with them 3 years ago.

That's interesting. It definitely makes it so you don't need a whole lot of money to compete in a big event.

It can get costly with the 250 entry, travel, and lodgings. That and you'll need a chunk of your vacation time if you're also looking to prefish.
