I was hoping someone would reply... I have nearly the same boat (1998 Stratos 283) and I have Elite 7X-HDI on bow and Elite 7HDI on console and the picture is a cluttered mess for me. They are essentially useless at this point and I've tweaked everything I know how to tweak. I've emailed screenshots and spent time on the phone with Lowrance but it was time wasted as they were no help.
Man, I hate no one has answered either. I had someone tell me that there may be interference from my digital Motor Guide, dunno. But, I need it set right to be able to use it.

Post on the regular lowrance page, not many use this page.
Just a guess, but you might want to mess with the noise rejection settings.
