I think the proper question should be do you own your boat or does your boat own you. As much as up keep is I think my boat owns me.

Bingo. Exactly the way we operate. If I'm gonna pay much interest, it's gonna be to myself. Anytime the wife and I by anything significant, we pay cash then make payments to ourselves to get back to where we were......If we don't have enough money in the bank for it, we don't buy it.

    Speaking of echo chambers...

About 3 years ago I sold my old boat and bought a bare-bones 10-year old basscat pantera classic in mint condition after having looked for the right boat for several years. My old boat plus some savings paid about 2/3, and I borrowed the rest including some money set aside for new electronics and a new trolling motor. I took a small 4-year loan and paid it off in full in about 2 years--I took the longer loan so payments every month would be small, with the intention of putting a few big payments into it (end of year bonus, $ from some side-work I do, etc). Im proud of what I did and how I did it and I dont think it was irresponsible or shortsighted. The interest I paid was inconsequential, and had I had cash in hand and the purchase price of the boat was that much more...I would have paid it anyway. Whether its intentional or not people in general on this site seem to look down their noses at those of us who cant afford a boat outright or who take on a loan on a boat, so it's no wonder nearly all the people who respond paid in cash. It also seems those who have paid in cash are extra proud of how responsible they are and are more willing to respond in general. I cant say I would personally be comfortable with a big loan on a new boat, but it doesnt seem quite so black and white as some would have me believe, and it's not for me to decide others priorities or risk appetite. Given this, the question as asked seems guaranteed to get skewed answers. If you really want to know try an anonymous poll, I think that would get you closer to the truth.

Got mine on a 15 year note. I'm two years in and have paid enough down on principle I am down to about 10 years left. On the pace I am at it should be paid for in another 4 to 5 years.
