    Portable, low-tech rifle rest

I don't belong to a shooting club, don't have access to a range. To sight in my rifles, I take it to our field or a gravel pit and shoot prone with a bean bag on a jury rigged box or something. What do you guys recommend for the casual (occasional) shooter for a rest?

I shot this group at 100 yards off the hood of my truck using a jacket as a rest.

Obviously, your truck is better than mine.

Brother in law used the drivers side of the bed of his truck, looking through the scope he had a clear shot... but barrel not so much. Pretty nice hole on passenger side that was a good conversation starter.

Honestly......if what you are doing is still getting you ZERO'd and adjusted, then you are about as low-tech as you can get. Remember, it's not the arrow but the Indian.

As far that goes....I have 3 bags, small bunny ear for rear/stock. Large bag for front elevation & a short owl ear for front/foregrip to go on top of that one. Once It's set it does not move. I also have a Lyman base to elevated shooting & has very good adjustment. I only use that if I am using a bench & really trying hard to get consistent grouping.

lots of times I don't like using a rear bag & instead hug the stock & use my arm as support.

I rarely have a rest in the field when hunting, so for practice I like to practice what I'll actually use in the field--prone and sitting using my body to get stable, offhand and kneeling for faster shots, etc. To sight-in and for playing with tiny targets I have a caldwell bench rest and a squeezebag for the butt, any other time I use a rest the rifle is laying across my backpack.

I take my life jacket (old Stearns type) and fold it making it 3 layers high. Sometimes I might put a jacket over it just because my camo jacket doesn't allow the rifle to slide as much. I can then put a sand bag under the butt to help on that end. Been doing it like that for years with no problems.

I bought a caldwell solo (i believe) from cabelas for $49. Very nice for aligning scopes and testing a rifles true potential. Also plan on weighting it and pattern the shotgun soon. I mostly shoot offhand while hunting but the most important thing is trigger time/manipulation

Caldwell benchrest with a butt bag for zeroing. Dropping the tailgate of your truck provides an improvised bench, just make sure you don't shoot the tailgate cable supports! After you get it zeroed, put away the Caldwell gear and shoot from field positions.

sandbags and lead shot bag off a bench. it doesn't take much wind to move the vehicle.
