My top speed, 920 PRO XP

Never really tried to top out my boat until I started reading some of the numbers stated here. So I was on Cumberland lake yesterday and the waters were calm, so I decided to give it all I could to see where I was at with the numbers. I was disappointed to say the least.

My boat is a 2014 920 PRO XP, I bough it new. It is all set up like day one when I brought it home. Running a 250 PRO XS and a 25 P three blade Fury. The boat was loaded down with two guys @ 200 Lbs each, a full tank of fuel, and a moderate to heavy load of tackle and gear. I have two power poles 8 footers, and four batteries.

I have only had this boat in the water a few times since I got it and I usually do more fishing than I do running and almost always have the wife and two dogs in the boat so I never try to really push it. Yesterday was different, I wanted to see how fast it would go.

I got a top speed of 67 MPH going off the GPS and my top RPM's were only 5300. I have to wonder why I could not get any more RPM from the motor. I am running the factory tach,. Are those accurate?

Any help and or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Did you break the motor in yourself? You probably need the motor raised up if you haven't touched it from factory settings.

Your tach may not be accurate, but the rpms sound about right or maybe just a bit low for the speed you are seeing. The first question that I have is, do you have a hot foot? If so, the first thing that I would check is to make sure that the stop screw on the hot foot isn't stopping the pedal from getting all the way to WOT. I have had that happen before.

Not set up right. Need more info to help you... Jackplate size?, P2P?, stock fury? That boat is a 75-79 mph boat when set up correctly and depending on conditions/load.

Also I suggest you invest in a smartcraft gauge to get proper info. And probably would be a good idea to get the motor put on a computer and to see if it is getting full throttle.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a Hot Foot and check to see if the pedal was bottoming out on the adjustment bolt. It is not, I still have a 1/4 inch to go when it is pressed all the way down.

Guessing there is an issue with the throttle cable for sure. Start there and try adjusting your P2P... My 920 runs best at 3.75 below pad. I think most are 3.5 below pad since the fury seems to like to run deeper. Then remember every prop is different from the factory... Once you get the most out of your current setup you can send that prop to Mark Croxton and he will blueprint/balance it for your setup. Your RPMs should be in the 5850-6000 range.

You should pull the cowl and see if the throttle is opening all the way when you mash the hot foot. Better yet, take it to the dealer and let them check it out if you aren't sure about it.

I feel that a 920 with a 25 fury and a moderate load will be over 5300 rpms, no matter the load or depth of the motor. Something is definitely wrong with the throttle cable, to me.

I ran 64-65 with 3 guys and a kid in the boat and was at about 5400 cruising this weekend. You got something wrong.

Thanks guys. I will check the throttle cable when I have an extra person in the shop. Should I lower the prop a little also?

Check your propshaft to pad measurement. You should be around 3 to 3.5 inches below the pad. If anything, you would have to raise it.

Definitely check that throttle, then. If you drop the motor, you will lose even more rpms.

Good luck. Let us know what you find out.

I run my 920 at 2 5/8 below with 12 1/2" of setback and have seen 81.4 without my poles solo with a light load, I ran it this weekend and with a partner and a heavy fishing load and 2 8' blades we stayed around 76-77 pretty easy. I also run a 26 fury I would check your prop to pad again and check your throttle.

I just checked my hot foot and it does not touch the bolt either. What you need to check is the actual throttle lever on the motor.

If the factory set it up I'm sure it's fine. I too say throttle cable. But dam 2014 boat and your finally opening it all the way up. Never running wide open is not good for your motor.

Glad to see this thread as I've been wondering about mine as well. Sunday on Cumberland with my partner and myself, 1/2 tank of fuel and full livewells I was turning 5700 rpm's per smartcraft running 73 gps. I haven't measured my p2p yet but I feel I can raise the engine up to get the extra rpm's I'm looking for. I think peak HP is 5850 rpm's so I've got a little to gain. It struggles to hit 5800 with just us and fuel in it. 10" plate with a 25 Fury, 2 8' poles as well.

I was on Cumberland too on Sunday! I have a 919 and I was able to get to 75.0MPH at a little over 5800rpms with 2 people and a HEAVY load. Buddy brought a 75lb tackle bag. No power poles though. I was happy with the speeds I was able to get.

We caught 12 fish with the biggest being a 4.21lb smallmouth.

Raising the motor is not always what you want to do. If I raise mine above 3.5 I lose speed. Measure your p2p first. Just sending your prop away for blueprint can give you 200 or more rpms. Every prop is different and every prop likes to be ran at different heights. Most stock props do not come perfectly balanced and to exact pitch on every blade. At 73 you are only 2-3 mph off with full load. Usually with 2 guys, full load and fuel I am at 75-76. So could just take some prop work and experimenting with weight distribution.
