"The man of system is apt to be very wise in his own conceit; and is often so enamored with the supposed beauty of his own ideal plan of government that he cannot suffer the smallest deviation from any part of it…He seems to imagine that he can arrange the different members of a great society with as much ease as the hand arranges the different pieces upon a chessboard.” Adam Smith, The Theory of Moral Sentiments

Geese. Was just trying to answer in as dumb a way as the question and the comments on scientific studies. I mean who cares if the fish feels it. It's all about how it tastes!
No one can be wrong that often so it has to be deliberate.

Always thump them on the head before filleting them. I learned this the hard way when one flopped at the wrong time and I stuck a bloody knife through my hand. This was on my third fish and the knife went all the way through the web between my thumb and forefinger.

Anything that can eat a bluegill probably does not feel much pain.

I didn't wait around to ask Mark,, was back in late 1968 spent 4 years on GUAM, and snorkel dived for flounder etc. at Tarague Beach Andersen AFB, Guam . And when your 25' deep and look thru the gaps in the coral reef, the Deep Pacific is actually 1st time eerie but clear water. compared to the Atlantic . Did a lot along the Ga coast Tybee Is.Jekyll Is. St.Simons Is. < some Hammer Heads frequent there. and Blue Crab fishing great, that certain time of year. Also did Daytona Beach Fl, Tindall AFB, Fl and lastly Panama City Beach. lastly didn't care for panama .. In unexpected , eye to eye with a Big Manta Ray in that murky Gulf Water. I was way out following a Chain down under a Buoy.. I about played Jesus and ran back to shore on top of water.. Tried some snorkeling in Local Lakes. I fish, but cant see finger tips at arms length. So unless in a Swimming POOL this oL Boy stays in a Boat or Bank Fish any more

Not sure if they do feel pain. Think of it this way, when a bass is spawning oftentimes the tail is raw and half worn off. If there was pain being felt that would sure as hell be a tender spot that I'd think they'd stop working the bottom with.

All creatures are different with how they feel pain or sense things that are what we would call pain. Even some fish have different nerves than other fish and can feel different senses of pain than others. But for the most part no they can't feel pain.
