Jackplate to transom bolts info needed.

I replacing the motor bolts and resealing my entire transom, the bolts are 5 3/4" and the ones I see in the kits are 4 1/2". Can anybody tell me the type of stainless steel bolts I need? I'm guessing the ones from the box stores don't have the same hardness or quality???

I went by the standards of Mercury bolts and had FASTENAL source them for me.

Only place I could find them was a Merc dealer, of course. They should of been gold plated for what they charged !!

    That's just bad info....

use FINE THREAD bolts, correct hardened bolts, and fine-thread BRASS Nylock nuts. If unsure, use the APPROPRIATE hardware specified for your engine.

55lb.s of torque transom to motor/jack plate...90lbs of torque motor to jack plate.

I think the ones on my boat are some junk ones from a hardware store, at this point I'm really doubting anything previously done to this boat with what I find on every closer inspection. I know they look nothing like the ones on Mercs site.

Thanks for the torque specs 95202.

17-4 stainless should be roughly comparable to grade 8 steel. But you won't pay hardware store pricing.

Lea's advice would be to tighten the nut not the bolt. But you probably already knew that, Good luck.

Do they have stainless in the right quality though.

Cost is irrelevant at this point and if 17-4 would work it would sure make my search easier. It would also be easier if someone had a kit with the right size, 6" seems to be unnormal.

For something as important as a jackplate, maybe your idea of having Don Weed get you the appropriate bolts is warranted?
