Yamaha lower unit drain plug issue

Doing the routine Lower unit fluid change and removed both plugs and pumped new fluid in. put the top screw in with no problem but went to put the lower unit drain plug back it but now doesn't want to go back in all the way. Starts fine but gets harder to turn when it gets half way. Don't want to force it from fear or tearing up the threads. Any ideas what to do?

Make sure you don't have the screws switched. Maybe?

Hope you didn't cross threaded the plug.
