    Muscadines for food crop?

Have any of you guys planted muscadines for deer and rabbit forage? Considering they are a second year producer, pretty hardy and not hard to maintain, it seemed like a pretty reasonable alternative to putting in fruit or pecan trees for food crop. All the reading I've done, deer and rabbits seem to eat them well. Not to mention they make good jellies and wines! lol
Just wondering if any of you had any experience with them.

I have not, but may have to check them out! Might also look into serviceberry or elderberry. I am planting about 2000 red osier dogwood this year as woody winter browse for my deer. But my situation isn't a need for food.

I'm going to look into those as well. I'm just trying to build in some variety in my wildlife forage. I have a very good stand of clover and Bermuda grasses, and just want to add some different forage options for the deer and rabbits both. I'm thinking along the lines of building up some short a frame, long trellis for the muscadines, and I believe that will also provide some good rabbit habitat.

Never tried growing them, but picked a ton of wild ones when I was a kid. My grandmother made fantastic muscadine jelly...

Mark, been here since May of 2016. Left the corporate life and went to work for a small mom and pop company. MUCH less stressful...and I love this part of Texas. Great fishing (salt and fresh), and plenty of stuff to hunt year-round.

The more I read about them the more I think I need to plant them. I can get two year old vines for about $9 each and probably find them cheaper if I look around. By the time I get some trellis set up I should be in good shape to plant them.

This reminds me. On another note. I became a member of the arbor day foundation. You can get some pretty nice trees for about $10 each. I am going that route to plant my orchard. They might have them Ill look thru my catalog
