To me,.... It sounds like the problem was the moderate action of the rod, not the stretch of the mono.
EVERY medium power / moderate action rod i have ever picked up feels like a buggy whip! When i go moderate action, it's always a MH power.

Again, what "mono" line were you using? Was it a copolymer?
