    tach issues???

I have a 1996 225 Promax----just bought the motor-----tach jumps around but sometimes settles down and reads right. A friend gave me an identicle tach of unknown working condition----it jumps around also. Voltages regulators are not burnt. Have swaped the tach wire between the 2 regulators--still no fix. connections are good.
-----Can I trouble shoot the regulators by looking for high-low voltage readings at battary when the tach is actually acting up???

if not can anyone suggest my next step????? I hate to buy a new tach only to find it may not work either!!!!

Have you tried moving the adjustment-pot switch on the back of the tach (move a couple positions back and forth, then return to ORIGINAL position)?
