I put a new fortex on the boat and when I put the trolling in the water the latch would not release and I could not stow the motor . I had to remove the motor from the bracket just to get the boat back on the trailer. any idea what went wrong ?

The mount may not be level causing it to bind thus the inability to properly retract latch.
Your rope may not be routed correctly. It must go over the pin by the bow guard.
There is a safety latch that the bow guard has to activate when the bow guard is put on the mount
