    replacing water impeller

I have a 1999 175 EFI. My question is, how difficult is it to replace the impeller? I'm not too mechanically inclined, but my father-in-law is a mechanic, and he's done quite a bit of stuff with his 115 4-stroke. What kind of cost difference would I be looking at if I do it vs. having it done by an authorized Mercury mechanic? Are there instructions online for how to do it? Lastly, just to show my ignorance with motors, is there a difference between a water pump and a water impeller with regards to outboards? Thanks!

Pretty straight forward, only hard the first time. Usually changed annually, if its been longer, I suggest whole kit and not just impeller.

I bieve there is a walk-thru under sherms tips on the left side bar. Has pics...etc. if you get the kit, dont freak out when you have extra gaskets/hardware, just match what you have and take pics each step to get gaskets in correct orientation.

Impeller is the part that spins and pumps inside the pump, whole pump includes gaskets, plates, and housing. Price difference is minimal, $20+ for impeller and $40ish for whole kit. After taking the time to remove the lower unit, it only makes sense to replace the whole pump. Parts to replace will cost less than $50-$60, paying mechanic is usually $150-$250, can't remember exactly what I paid last time, been awhile.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm new to the board, so I don't know who Don is to ask him about a manual.
