Trolling Motor breaker reset switch - Read.

I'm posting my story so those of you that don't know where the reset switch is on your trolling motor batteries is...

In case you ever are using the trolling motor and all of the sudden it just quits working, but the rest of you boat is still working fine, there's a little breaker button on the back side of the above picture just where my finger is touching. This might save you in a future trip from coming home early and tearing your MK foot pedal apart looking for a fuse for the Trolling Motor. Hope this helps someone...

    Thanks for the post.

Took me a long time on the river to find it the day mine tripped. Would have saved a lot of searching if I had known what I do now. To a newbie that is the most ridiculous place to put it....I bet I searched under the dash for 20 minutes before I thought about looking in the back..lol!!!

Connected to the battery terminal is a breaker - it's about 1 inch, square shape, and has a little trip button on the back. It's happened twice in the past 3 weeks, when I had the TM on High (100 for you minn kota owners ), and the breaker tripped. The first time it happened I went back to the ramp, then home, then ripped apart the entire trolling motor trying to figure it out. Turns out the breaker isn't under the dash but connected to the battery cable, which in turn is connected to the POSITIVE post on the battery.

Have had mine do it a few times, had me scratching my head pretty hard the first time, especially since my MK has really enjoyed its warranty Is this normal for one to throw? I know If run mine for more than about a minute solid without getting off the button it will throw, and this sucks because pretty well with the power that thing has the only time I run it at 100% its because I want to shoot across a cove or something really quick which is usually a distance a little further than what it wants to go. I've pretty much learned to just stick it on about 85% if I need to go that distance.

No, it should not throw at 100% that easily. I have an 82lb MG motor and mine has tripped 3 or 4 times in the past 2 years. Usually when I have vegetation wrapped around it and keep motoring. I would pull the prop and see if you line or gunk around the prop shaft.

If not, either the breaker is bad or the motor needs to be serviced because it is pulling too much. My boat has another breaker on the cranking battery. You might want to swap it with that one to see if the problem goes away. If not, it is the motor.

Keep in mind, there is also a reset on most trolling motors.

Those breakers go out. If they are more than 5 years old you need to replace them. They aren’t expensive and most part places carry them. Mine did the same. Replaced with new one and not had any problems

Remember that the larger the motor, the more power it needs to work. I would also suggest you upgrade the TM wiring from the battery to the plug.

Breakers also keep you from overheating your wiring. Match the electrical cabling to the breaker. Increasing the breaker size could result in a fire if the trip point is too high.
