Seems to be a trade off between damned if you do and damned if you don't. Use a boat mounted filter that is.

Filtration is good. Extra filtration may be better. Or it might be worse. The concern is excess restriction to fuel flow.

Despite the recommendation by Mercury that a boat mounted filter is not necessary, the handwriting is on the boating wall that folks want them and are going to use them. Mercury might as well offer some filters of their own and capture some of the market for filter sales.

The debate between the use of a 10 micron filter element versus a 2 micron filter element will continue.

Most/all engine makers specify a value for maximum restriction to fuel flow. It is oh so easy to simply plumb a vacuum gauge into the fuel system so that the restriction can be monitored. Not only will it indicate that all is well (or when it is becoming not so well) not changing filters unnecessarily can more than pay for the price of the vacuum gauge.

It's probably made for a large fuel capacity boat 100 plus gallon thats fueled on the water so you don't have to change the fuel filter so often.

Newer 4-stroke engine models (75hp and up) REQUIRE a boat-mounted separating filter be installed. This is due to the removal of the engine-mounted separating filter (entirely).

The filter shown in Post#1 can be safely installed with straight fittings in most any application, due to it's low-restriction value.

Don before this gets out of hand and we have folks buying/installing more crap on rigs, Mercury's position for the Pro XS engines has not changed.
They still state that the engine mounted filter is sufficient for fuel filtering needs?

    That is correct.

There is an "unpublished" modification/provision for using the high-flow, high-volume EXTERNAL filter, if someone really has to do so (or insists on doing so).
