1996 Intruder 175 Lower Seal Kit ???? Specialty Tools?

Guys, my new to me E175GLEDB Intruder has a leaking lower unit. I've already ordered the seal kit and a new water pump and will be tackling this weekend. I have scoured the boards here on tips etc.

I have the harmonic balancer puller and 5/16" all thread, nuts, washers etc.

Will get the gasket sealer or form-a-gasket before I start.

What about pulling the old seals, will a flat screwdriver work or do I need a seal puller and which type if I do, and for seating the new seals in the bearing carrier and up top, any special seating tool or just use a size appropriate socket or block of wood?

It's all good fellas, it's got grease running down the skeg from the lower, but it's been sitting for a while, so I'm just going to do the whole thing for peace of mind. It's needs a water pump and lower seal for sure, so might as well just do it all...

I know Mike. It's all good. I was just thinking, if he knew which seal/o-ring was leaking, he may not need to do the whole thing. But, being a new to him motor, all new seals/o-rings is definitely the way to go.

A J hook seal puller will work perfectly. Put the RBC in a vise and remove the seals and then put the drive shaft bearing in the vise with a cloth to protect the surface. A seal driver kit from Harbor Freight will work just fine when installing them. If you use the single lip seals on the RBC the spring side on one goes towards the inside and the other faces the prop. Prop ][ gearcase. The shift rod O rings are best replaced with the housing out and a pick to remove and hemostats to install. The gasket should be replaced. Then install the shift rod and then the housing cover. Once complete shift the rod to Neutral and set the height to 21 1/4" from the deck to the center of the shift rod eye.

Fred, did I look at the diagram wrong, or does his lower unit use the larger single seal for the prop shaft and drive shaft?

They used both depending on the model year. Either one is acceptable. I prefer the single lip seals. That's just me.

Thanks guys, got the seal driver kit today and the j-jook puller at harbor freight, going to get this done over the weekend... We're still months from ice out, but with the new to me rig, it needs lots of attention before the season starts...

Some triple guard grease would be helpful too to lube the lips on the seals and the prop shaft. A tube will last you a lifetime.

Also remember to put a sealant on the outside edges of all seals that have a metal rim....

Guys, I don't know about your experience, but I've had a ton of trouble with the double lip seal working it's way out of the carrier. It appears to be rubber coated along the outside perimeter, and will move up and out on you because it's not tight...
