    ignition switch issue...fuse???

I have a 2001 21xd. Put it up for the winter and now I can not get anything from the ignition switch to the motor. I have a 2.5L 280 merc. Is it possibly a relay on the engine or is there a fuse I am overlooking somewhere?

    1-Chk Battery.
2-Chk Battery cable for not making good connection, (either end of either cable).
    3-Chk power to ign switch.
4-Try jumper at the starter solenoid to see if it spins over. If so then there's a break in the start wire from the switch to the solenoid....,(Mice?)!

I'm not aware of a relay or fuse in the ignition itself?
Report back with more detail on what you've tried, it will be something simple!

I've done everything you've said, except locating a break from the start switch to the solenoid. How do I get around or locate that break?

Forgive my shorthand ignorance but what is the TO switch?

He was saying "to" the switch!
The wire start solenoid wire will be color coded the same at the switch as it is on the small terminal of the starter relay, (I'm not at a chart at this time so can't for sure tell you the color).
Make sure the large positive wire at the switch is hot. It should come from the battery in probably a Red or Yellow 10 Ga. wire.
If it's hot then find the wire that energizes to starter solenoid and it should become hot when you turn the key to start position.
If No, the switch is bad!
If Yes then there's a problem with the solenoid wire between the switch and solenoid.
Being you never said whether it would spin over by jumping the solenoid it leaves us scratching heads!
BTW, if the engine cranks over but just won't start then check the Kill Switch and it's wiring!

Good info. Thanks. Yes. The engine spins over when I jump the solenoid. I'll check the power to the switch and from the switch to the solenoid next. My initial thought was a fuse and/or the switch. Since there's no fuse that leaves one option in my opinion. To add some to this my fuel pump doesn't run like usual either when the switch is in the on position. The large wire at the solenoid is hot. At my 2 relays under the starter the red wire is also hot. I'm a novice mechanic and am almost clueless with power issues.

The larger 10Ga. wire at the switch should be hot at all times. If not then my guess is it has a problem making connection at the battery.
There is a possibility that the wire will be fused, or have a fusable link on the battery end, close to the battery!
If it did happen to be a Mouse problem, it's seldom they'll chew completely through a 10ga. wire when there's so many smaller ones around!! LOL

I do have power to the switch. There is no power, even when turned on or to start position, to the yellow/red wire that goes to the solenoid, behind the switch or at the solenoid. I assume the switch is bad. Can I replace just the switch or do I need to order a complete harness with switch.

    You can replace the switch!
So, nothing else is hot with the key on etc??? If so, the switch has took a dump!
I haven't seen that often but it's certainly possible....good luck!!!

Sometimes the contacts on the kill switch will get dirty, try flipping the kill switch up and down a few times and see if that fixes it also

I checked the yellow/black and yellow/red wires only but those are dead. The red wire going in is still hot. I assume its the switch and I'll be ordering one once I find the part #

I did that prior to posting but it was definitely a consideration. THanks

I've certainly seen that happen too, but he was saying that NOTHING was hot with the ignition on or in start but the big feed wire. The accessories wiring should be hot even with the kill switch off so assuming it's the switch itself!

Chris can you text that to me, I'm struggling with changing a boat from Yamaha to merc rigging on some stuff and that might come in handy.
