    should I be worried

My buddy just bought a brand new Z519 Ranger with a 225 Mercury Pro XS 2 stroke. He did not get the Mercury Smart Craft gauge installed to monitor engine temp etc. I think it was a mistake. He has never owned a Mercury engine. All his previous engines were evinrude. I told him about critical warm up and advised him to visit this forum. Im worried he made a mistake. What do you all think?

While not required, a Smartcraft device will let him monitor engine temp so he knows for sure. I'd never own an Optimax (or any other new Mercury engine) without a Smartcraft device. If he's cost conscious point him toward the Vessel View mobile app.

Not your problem to worry about and many motors have survived withough a smartcraft gauge. It is most definitely one of the "worth t" items to buy though.

I found out just how valuable the temp gauge is in the winter of 2013.
I'm surprised anyone in the business would sell one of these new hi priced Merc's without one.
