Went out last Sunday and left the hose unhooked at start-up all through the day. Seemed to run fine, smoked about normal at startup and did not seem as bad from spot to spot.

Heading back out tomorrow for a few hours in the AM, will report back asap. I still seems to be running rich though...

Made it back out this morning with the hose disconnected.

Started right up smoked as it usually does, let the boat idle while I parked the truck. It was not smoking as bad as it did in the past. Let it warm up for 5min or so before running down the lake. Fished for about 45 minutes then started up and ran back up the lake.

Taking the hose off really seems to help with the smoke but it still seems like it's running rich.

I have not ordered the thermal air valve yet, waiting on confirmation that is the issue.

Have you verified it's actually coming up to temp on the Starboard Bank (143 degrees)?

No. I assume I need to remove and test the stats on a pan of boiling water?

If in doubt, I would just buy new thermostats. They don't cost much. But yes, you can watch them open/close using a good thermometer in a pan of water.

Just be sure to [Edit- SUSPEND ] the thermostat on a piece of STRING (it should not touch the pan).

Yes, I suspect it would be a very good idea to suspend the suspect thermostat on a string.

    Thanks!

Change the ridiculously overpriced thermal air valve, if that doesn't help, check jetting. Everything points to running rich in my opinion. If the motor was jetted for sea level and your are at 2000 it will run fat. Check your plugs. Dark/sooty=rich. If your plugs are dark, check main jet sizes. Drop down one size. If all six are the same number (example .070) change 1,3,4,and 6 to .068. Leave 2 and 5 alone, they should be fatter. One other thing. If you have been running fat for 3 year, you probably should decarb the motor. Good Luck.

He has .074 jets on all carbs. I looked through the dozens of jets I have and didn't have any luck. Does anyone have any 72's and 70's they are willing to part with? 4 of each.

He told me they were WMV-16 carbs. .074 jets in all 6. I have two sets of untouched WMV-18 carbs off of 2.5 200 motors in my garage and they are jetted at .074 also.

    I have the wmv carbs 16-1 3423, 16-2 3423, 16-3 3433.

I'm about at 2700ft above sea level, when Lee Sanderson installed the powerhead it might have been at 174 ft? I have never changed them or was not aware they were changed. I'm trying the Thermal Air Valve first, then try to re jet for my elevation.

well good news 16 came on xr6 prob what you got .074 are std size for all 6cyls on xr book say jets should be good to 5000 would not go any lower than .070 lean it down at idle with air adj screw or ret timming just lil, and put OILER back on for less smoke and less oil useage and cleaner running engine JOE

also be sure check valve in oil hose is not stuck or sticking open letting too much oil in fuel make sure check valve in block working correctly relieving pressure engine off
