    Trolling motor upgrade?

Looking for some opinions here on trolling motor selection. I currently have an 18' BC Sabre with an older Minn Kota Maxxum #74. The trolling motor has always had plenty of power and never really struggled to move the boat in wind or current. Looking to pick up a new Minn Kota this upcoming season and was wondering if you think the #70 Maxxum would be adequate or I should get the #80? Also is the Fortrex worth the extra $200 over the Maxxum if I go with the #80?

Motor wise, I believe the maxxum and fortrex utilize the same motors. With fortrex you are buying the mount and lift assist.

The MaxPro no longer exist -- discontinued when the Fortrex came out. Difference in Fortrex and Maxxum 80 is the mount with lift assist. Question back is, is the lift assist worth the extra money. If you want US2, it is only available on the Fortrex.
BTW, on the Sabre, get the 80, don't go with the 70. Let me know if I can help.

To your question John, lift assist in not a big deal to me so I'd probably go with the Maxxum.

I pull a 20 foot boat with a Minnkota Maxx 70#+ motor that I have beat to death for years and added a home made lift kit, it lifts with two fingers because I'm old (74) and cheap. I'd like an 80# motor myself, I think if you are happy with what you have, you will be even happier.
Motors with lift assists have noticeably quieter hinge joints.

Either option will have more power than the old 74... We rebuilt a 40 pd and wow just having a fresh 40 was great.

I would get the 80#. I put a new 70# on my xpress x19, it does the job fine but if you get into heavy weeds or wind the 80# will just be that much better. Also John is a great guy to work with!

Like I said above, I'm a cheap ass. That's why the 70 is even being considered. I actually river fish quite often and have never had my 74 over 60% to keep up in flood water current. That's the reason I'm thinking it'll be enough. I wonder if there's much of a difference in the new 70 compared to the old 74 I currently have.
