96 nitro savage 896 setup help

Needing help with setup. I have a 200 efi mariner , prop to pad is 3 1/2. Wot is 64 -65 @ 5850. I can trim more but I loose speed. I am running a custom 25p tempest plus with more cupping and rake. When I trim up at wot I have a lot of steering torque and high rooster tail. If I run a hydrofoil I can pick up 2-3 mph. All testing is tournament loaded, and it jumps on plane in about 3 1/2 sec. Do I need to raise my engine up some? I don't have a jack plate, but have 3 holes of adjustment on motor that I can raise it. Thanks in advance.

With No JP 3.5 may be a tad high. I seem to remember getting 66-67 on mine. With a stock 25p Tempest.

Jimmy do you know what your prop to pad measurement was? I measured mine off my driveway floor, I am thinking it was not level. So my prop to pad my not be 3 1/2. I will try and remeasure tomorrow to make sure.

I had a hydraulic plate, but normally began the process at 3.5 below pad.

I remeasured it today and it is 3 1/2 below pad. My prop guy is telling me I need to raise to engine up some, I should not need much trim, because my prop is lifting like crazy. Everyone I can find that is or has run this hull is saying anywhere from. 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 below pad. What do you think? I guess what I am really asking is should I go up 1 hole or 2.

I just dug WAY back in my BBC history and I giv you some inaccurate info before...

Here are the numbers I had.... (copied from a 2010 post)

    - Runs 64.9 GPS @ 5750 with a stock 23 Tempest Plus.
    - Ran a friend's stock 25 Tempest Plus, 64.8 GPS @ 5300. Not enough power to spin it faster!

If you are prepared to move it up, give it a shot. VERY important to watch the water pressure, especially in the turns. If going up 1 hole makes it worse, no need to go up 2. Also, check things like holeshot time with a stopwatch. You wouldn't want to "guess" if it's better.

One last thought... if your going to split the motor from the hull, it's a great time to stick a 6" plate on it. There's one for sale on the Jackplates page for $100. I was told by a very reliable source at Tracker that those hulls "really wake up" with a 6" plate.

Ok. Thanks. The crazy thing is that I can pick up 3-4 mph on top end if I use a hydrofoil. I don't understand that part. Right now it takes 3 1/2 sec to get on plane

3.5 to plane is not bad at all!!! The hydrofoil comment leads me to believe that your not getting enough bow lift without it.

I get more bow lift without the hydrofoil. I had a buddy tell that it's giving me stern lift =more boat out of water/ less drag = more speed. And he said by going up on engine height will help. I don't know that's why I am asking here.

Definitely stick a 6" plate on it if you can swing it. A few years ago I wanted to see how much was in her so I worked for a couple of weeks getting all that I could. 6" plate was one of the first suggestions and it instantly added 4-5 mph. Will also make it a heck of a lot easier to find that PTP height sweet spot. 25 Tempest plus was the prop for speed, but dogged out of the hole in the summer. Picked up a 24 Trophy Plus for the summer.

I got 67-68 with no jackplate, second hole on the transom bracket. With a 6" jackplate, I got 67 with worse holeshot. I got a 10" jackplate and got 67-68 with a much smoother ride and same holeshot as no jackplate and better water pressure. I have a 25" Tempest.

Ok. I installed a 6 in plate. I started at 3 1/2 below pad. Went up to 3 1/4 below pad all I can get is 65-67 depending on lake conditions. It will chine walk now but drivable still. Have I got all I am going to get out of this savage? Or does anyone think I can get a couple more. I see others with the same boat saying there running 68-69. Are they full of it?

My guess is you are pretty much at the top. Its surprising how much difference there can be between 2 identical boats. You may drive yourself crazy (or broke) trying to get that extra 2-3...
