My boat stays outside all winter and I have always just plugged the charger in about once a month till the lights go solid green and then unplug it. Never had an issue with any of my batteries and don't have to worry about a fire, no matter how rare it is.

Whenever I put my boat up for long-term storage away from home, I pulled my batteries. I would charge them up with a manual charger then bring them in the basement. I would always top them off in the spring and they never had an issue. Now that my boat is in the garage, I just plug them in every few weeks to keep them topped off.
