If you're looking to extend your oil changes, go ahead and change the oil filter and top it off with more Mobil 1. Wouldn't hurt to spend $20 on an oil analysis to see what the condition of the motor is--if you have many miles on it. Blackstone Labs is the place for oil analysis.

Next time you fully change oil, go for Mobil 1 EP (Extended Performance). It's a 15K mile oil that's superior to plain Mobil 1.

Pull the dipstick an wipe on white paper. If it looks new reset it. My 2012 and 2014 ram hemis would look new to 6k miles I swapped at 7500. Oil breaks down with time as well also your first dose has like conventional oil in it. I'd prolly change it now anyways. And if your trying to go 15k you should probly get the 15k oil for better additives that fight the oil breaking down better.

Just an update...I Changed the oil filter and added a quart of oil...not a lot of color oft in oil..so this weekend I will go full syn..here's my question, by the way oil has about 5500 on it. Now the question, oil even after adding a full quart is low..how much do you think could of been absorbed by the metals within the engine, if any...I was taking back by the oil level...when I chand
ged it I put in 6 quarts ..

The 5.3s tend to use oil, keep an eye on it.

If I were you, I would contact the local dealer to see when your warranty expires or send me your VIN and I'll check it. Then take the truck in and tell them it is using oil. GM has a new piston and ring kit to install along with a LH valve cover. PM me if I can help.

The GM DOD V8s burn oil, in deference to pleasing the EPA.

IMO, deactivating the DOD may significantly or completely stop oil burn/consumption in the "earlier stages" of the engine's life (until it naturally occurs at higher miles). I added a simple override in my 2010 Tahoe with the LMG flex fuel 5.3 with a Range Disabler - just in for the sake of caution.

GM spec on excessive oil consumption is 1qt every 2k miles or less. The AFM motors burn it. Have done too many piston jobs under warranty to remember. That motor uses Dexos oil which now is full synthetic. Change every 5K. Most people never even check the oil level now. IMO I wouldn't go by the oil life monitor.

I've had three 5.3's and none of them has ever used oil. I do my own oil changes and have used Mobil 1 exclusively. My son has the last one I owned with 190K on the clock still doesn't need any added between 5k oil changes.

My 5.3 was always about 1/3 quart low when it came time to change the oil. Got it at 20K with dealer service records and drove it past 90K and it never used more or less.

I ran nothing but Mobil 1 in my 2008 Silverado 5.3 and still changed it when the system told me to. And every time it was about 2 quarts low. If you're going to extend your change time, check your level.

Right now I'm running a 2015 5.3L, extended cab, all star, whatever they call them these days, Silverado. My 3rd Silverado, The best truck I have ever owned. Ride, mileage, and comfort.

I've been pretty loyal to the Chevy brand the last 50 years. Changed my own oil, always! BUT this thing takes 8.5-9 quarts of Dexos oil, or my preferred Mobile 1.

I change oil by the oil life monitor. Why, because if the dealer is paying they don't want to see it unless you are in the 10% or less oil life remaining, or the change oil light comes on. If I'm paying they seem to want it every 3000 miles. Soooooo I get into the 10% or less right around 7000 miles, give or take.

Best deal since sliced bread. Take it to the dealer. Oil change (8-9 quarts Dexos) filter, tire rotation, top off fluids, and safety check. All while I have a free coffee and watch TV! I can't even buy the oil and filter for the $60 dollars they charge. No-brainer.
