This would make my decision a lot harder between a new Z17 and Z18. Only real difference is engine/speed and a slightly larger front deck but for 5-10K less I could spend on a Ultrex trolling motor and nicer electronics. I am currently in a Nitro 640 16'4" with a 75hp so this would be a nice improvement, I don't need to go 60-70 mph on the water.
I think with a jackplate and the right prop this boat could probably see mid 50's with the Command Thrust gearcase. Ive been in the hunt for a new boat for about a year but Im going thru a career change so waiting for things to settle down first before pulling the trigger. I like the 17 for its size and performance but I too have looked at the 18. Like you I think Id rather save a few bucks on the boat and use that for options like graphs etc

saw one in person for the first time today, decently spacious for a small boat
im coming from a 640lx as well. the center storage on the z17 is a nice addition compared to our boat. as well as the rear deck compartments being able to fit plano boxes. bass pro guy said the z17 can only fit 7' rods which is bummer, i can fit 7'9" in my port side locker on the 640
Got to see a 17 at Springfield BPS today. Feels big for a 17.5ft boat. The port and starboard lockers are open all the way to the front allowing then to be used for rod storage if needed. Tons of room in the battery area. If you wanted you could run 4 batteries back there easily. Although the BPS salesman didnt seem to know a lot about setting up bass boats for best performance ("If it needed a jackplate they would have put one on at the factory"), he did say they could order a plate and install it. Same for the Fortrex or Ultrex, not a factory option but can be done. Step up cooler is huge, very deep. Boat on showroom floor was little over 26k with upgraded wheels/spare, cover, tilt hydraulic steering and Hook 5 in console. Plenty of room under the console for my 6ft 2in 240lbs. I would have to take the windscreen off or see if it could adjust it down. It blocks view of the bow.

I LOVE MY Z-7 !
Seen a few 17's at the factory with trailers like the Z6 :-) Maybe they saw the error in the cheaper trailer.
