Sell, that's what I did with my 05
1998 Champion 190 200 Mercury
Ditto. Sold my 07. Loved the truck but all findings and readings was not good. Ford messed up with that 3v. I also have a 01 2v 5.4 that runs like a top. Went on a limb with ford and bought a 2016 with the ecoboost. A sucker for the torque.
Did a check engine light kick on, or are you like ALL the 5.4 owners and running a OBD app all the time?
My 2005 ticks like a diesel, but since it's my fishing/hunting truck it just annoys me like crazy, I'm not going to tear down the engine to do the phaser/chain/tensioners replacement.
I'm about to drop in an android Radio and keep the OBD bluetoothed to it just to see what I'm missing on my super crew...
There's only one
Oil and filter are critical with these engines. The only thing my truck likes is Motorcraft 5/20 synthetic blend and a Wix filter. Oil pressure controls the timing. The dealer will charge you up to $2k. You can change both cam phasers and both solenoids for under $400 and not tear the whole front end off the engine. It's still a fairly big job just to take the valve covers off, so its worth while to change both the cam phasers and solenoids. There is a "wedge" you can jam in from the top and not worry about the timing chains falling off the crank. You can get it done in a long day if you're mechanically inclined. I got everything I needed from rockauto.
Try this at your own risk....The old timers swear by adding a qt of atf with oil changes. Atf is high detergent and will clean sticky lifters, valves, oil passages ect. It's not like a engine flush that knock chunks loose and make things worse. It dissolves sludge and varnish slowly. I've used it on a few engines and worked great.
I bought a cheap wedge on ebay. Here's a video
You need cam phasers and I bet timing chain guides and tensioners too. I'm a tech at a ford dealer and that repair isn't cheap. Pretty much all 04-08 5.43v's have these issues and are the death of many
I'm just driving mine until it dies.![]()

I just bought an 09 F150 5.4L 3V - hope its good to me - only 70K on it
Good luck. Fingers crossed. I've put 50k on mine. I bought at 106. Went to 150k on original plugs. Has had full synthetic is whole life, according to original owner.
