Trolling motor interference HB HD SI 899

    Hello all,

I've had 2 HD SI 899s for a few years. The bow unit is suddenly getting interference (only SI) when I get on the Trolling motor. If I am at 100% on TM it gets better. It seems the lower the TM % the more interference I get. When off the TM its clear as a bell. Could this be a sign of weak batteries? Since I've not had this problem before I cant think of anything else.

    Thank you,

Probably bad motor brushes, unless you whacked something & bent the shaft or willy-wonked the prop.

Check it out & let us know what you find out!

Brushes can be a pain, but the TM shops can get new seals & do it pretty quick if that's the problem.

If MinnKota sudden change I would check the fuse in the head. That often is the culprit when changes suddenly

Good point Doug, not all of them have a fuse in the head- like my old PDv2 T-Rex.

    If there's a blown fuse, there's usually a cause - and IF it's water intrusion that's a bad thing....if that's the case.

Yes - check for a fuse in the head (What motor do you have?)

My MG 109 did the same thing. I ran a ground wire from the transducer mount up the shaft and tied it into the ground at the TM plug. Definitely helped but still not perfect.

Im going to check the fuse tomorrow. I have a Minn kota Maxxum 80. I tried the ground wire, that did nothing at all.

    Thanks all

Did you clunk the prop good on anything?

Otherwise I would ask Mr. Jones what he thinks - the guy know his stuff.

The prop is like new, Ive never whacked anything very hard. A few tree limbs here and there but nothing major. Dont think the shaft is bent. Very frustrating.

    Thanks all for the inputs,

How old is the motor, and does it have a lot of hours?
Just for giggles, you can pull the prop and may as well check for "stuff" behind it - then re-seat it...wouldn't hurt.

jaws, Have you done anything with the wiring in your boat? I decided to organize and tidy up the wiring in mine.(cable ties and neatly coiling my excess cables). Found that I suddenly had TM interference! Putting the wires in contact with each other was the culprit. Just separating by inches made a huge difference and making sure any coiled wire was in a figure 8 rather than just a round coil. I also found troubleshooting out of the water just added to the confusion. The boat on the water benefits from the ground provided by the water. Good luck. Bob

    Bobcoy,

Thanks for the input. I have not changed a thing. The interference just started out of the blue.

Other than settings like sonar filters I would suggest you call HB.(possibly changed on a reset to defaults) It is obvious something has changed. Bob

    Update:

I decided to upgrade my Trolling Motor and installed a brand new Fortrex 80 24V. To my surprise I have the same interference. ANY IDEAS would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

How is the transducer cable routed and stowed?

The Cable is routed around the motor housing, up the shaft, down the cable and int the unit. The excess cable is under the bow panel loose not coiled.
