What year did they start making the 196? I'm thinking about buying one that's listed as a 2001 model year. When I go to the iBoats site to look up the specs they don't list one until 2002.

My friend has one that's a 2000 model. I am not sure when they started to make it but I know the 198 replaced it at some point.
I have a 2001 made in Mountain Home.

Look at the HID# on rear of boat, last two numbers are year made.

Nada Guides shows a 2001 196.

Haven't went to look at it yet, it's about a 7-8 hour drive. They're asking 14900.00. Good deal?
Bruce..last two number are not year made. They are model year which could be a year later. The 3rd to last number shows yeer built.
An example.....My HIN is J405. This says built in Oct of 2004, but is a 2005 model year. Model year changes in Mid summer.
Would be nice to see another northern hoosier Champ

Looks to be in excellent condition. For a dealer its priced fair. My main concern is what year the optimax is. The first opti's were prone to failures. Do your homework and hunt around on the merc. forum.Originally Posted by LAKE EFFECT

Appears to be pretty nice shape for an 01. Didn't find what they're asking for it though. As far as the opti goes, seems if it was going to pop it would've long ago. As usual. Look it over well.

Looks to be in great shape! Tandem trailer would be very nice. Need to get a diff Jack plate and update electronics, although those electronics would still work just fine. I'd look at the engine very close to make sure it checks out. Offer them. 13,500. 15k might be a tad high for it, but if it's in really nice shape it's worth whatever someone will pay.
2001 was the first model year for the 196 and the 206.

Is your friend sure of the model year? They are not in the brochures until 2001. The 198 debuted in 2004. The last model year for the 196 was 2006.
I heard that a good friend of mine sealed the deal on the boat you mentioned. He sold his Ranger and will join the Champion family!
