    Rods for 'gills

What rods are you guys using for 'gills. I've dug out my old St. Croix Premier 6' ultralight but I need something less whippy. I can and will use it but honestly I hate the thing. I need to get out and shake a few different models and see what I like but wouldn't mind hearing your present choices too.

I go whippy all the way. I run a Daiwa Presso 6-6UL, a Major Craft Trapara 652SUL and my son likes a Field and Stream IM7 5-6L. I am usually fishing moving baits such as beetle spins, roadrunners or tiny cranks.

Last week I broke a pair of our pet 25+ y.o. Pinnacle 10' steel head rods, and need to replace them.

    Let the opinions begin!

See if you can find a Quantum Smoke SKS633F. It's 6'3" and listed as a medium light. Perfect for bream and the dink spotted bass we have so many of. I cast 1/16 and 1/8 beetle spins and similar lures and it's perfect for that.

Try a Loomis 782. Its a light action 6.6" but with a moderate taper. Perfect for the 32nd weights. A true light action with a fast tip would probably be on the stiff side with the lighter weights.

Actually the Wally Marshal pro series is not a bad rod at all for casting or tight lining. I’ve use them for drop shot when I need my Dobyns 701s for football rods.
great for casting 1/16 thru 1/8oz,, and would probably handle a 1/4oz

I can't help you with off the rack rods but if you can build your own, contact Utmost Enterprises and look at these. I buy them for rods I build and they will give you 25 to 30 percent off. You probably want the 2 or 3 power.

BnM Sam Heaton 9 and 10ft. Are my personal favorites paired with an eagle claw inline reel. Just for dippen. Casting slip floats the 7 ft. BnM crappie wizzard with a president reel.

I cast jig and lures more than vertical fishing. Besides the Quantum listed above, I also like these Wally Marshall rods by Lews in the 6' and 6 1/2' versions. I use them with a 1500 size reel and 4# line.

I also use the BPS Microlites in 6-7 ft lengths. 2500 or 4000 Shimano reel, 4 lb hi vis. I throw 1/32 oz jigs at 'em. That's all I try. Them or crappie I do the same thing. Sometimes it works.

Loomis GLX DSR820 is the best I've ever used. I had a gloomis panfish 6'6" imx but it was really too whimpy for most things. Another option is a cabelas fish eagle II 6' rod that's 1/32-3/16 or so. It's been good. To me a light action spinning rod in the 7 foot range is about as good as it gets.

Anybody try out the falcon slab series rods yet? I am looking into getting a set up strictly for crappie/perch and they looked decent. Just don't like to be the guinea pig on new products.

Today I checked out St. Croix Triumph and Premier 6' and 6'6" Light/Fast. Close but still a tad too whippy for me... but I'd much rather use one of these than my UL.

I'll just give my Avid 6'9" ML/XF another go and see if it's acceptable. I don't consider it bass worthy (except for dinks) so maybe it's usable for panfish.

I used a 6,6 or 7ft Shakespeare micro series from walmart. I think they are like 17 bucks.

Try a 7' Medium Light rod. Should still have a light tip with more backbone.

I use the premier 6'6" light/ fast for gills, usually cast bluegill bugs with 1/16oz jighead tipped with a waxworm. I've got a 7ft Avid UL but like you it way to whippy, also have a premier 7ft ML/ fast is a tad to stiff. The light/ fast is a good compromise.
