    Evinrude Lower unit compatability

    Hey guys,
I have a 1988 200hp evinrude (e200stlccm) with a crack in the lower unit. One of my friends tells me it is a high performance after market upgrade (Bob's maybe?) not sure on that. Anyway, I need to replace it fairly quickly obviously- even though it's running just fine right now. I need some advice from someone that knows a bit more than me on lower unit compatibility. I found a lower unit from a 1985 150 horse evinrude on craigslist that I need to move quickly on if it will work. I'm afraid I know just enough about these things to be dangerous. Could someone please advise me on this? Please and Thanks!
So long and thanks for all the fish...

Thanks! I found a site that confirmed that but didn't know if I should trust it.

If you can post up a picture 800 X 600 pixels of the case it may just be a seam where the nose cone is attached to the original gearcase. they use bondo to fill in the seams so that may be what you are seeing.

Is the crack you're seeing producing an oil leak? If not, it could be bondo cracking where the nose cone was applied and smoothed over. The 2 gearcases you have asked about are compatible, but the shift rod will have to be exchanged.

You can see where lower unit lube is seeping out but the color is correct. It doesn't appear milky in color at all.

This is in the area of the pinion bearing which is a bad place to see a crack. If you catch it in time, the internals might be saved and just get a housing and you'll have a spare gearcase.

No, Welding on the case in this area imposes too much heat, and will distort the bearing bore.

JB would close the crack, but this is a high stress area and would more than likely re-crack.
