    Mahi madness

Sold my Pathfinder a couple months ago and bought an offshore boat. Finally got a chance to go offshore this week and we had a good day on the Mahi.

Had a steady bite until lunch then the bite slowed down but ended up with 17 in the box and lost 5. Great day on the water but had a bumpy ride back in.

Clearing the inlet, 30 miles before we started fishing

caught my mate sneaking a nap

    Days catch

    here's my new ride. 2005 Kencraft Challenger 235 w/ twin 250's with only 220hrs.

I take it you must be the ugly one

    "Which one's the ugly one?"

Nice boat. Only 23.5 feet? Is that how the model number works?

Guess I will take credit for being the ugly one. I'm on the right wearing the blue shirt.

The boat is 23.5' long at the waterline, overall length is close to 27'. Several boat manufacturers did this years ago to be able to compete in the 23' and under class in SKA King Mackerel tournaments.

I thought it it looked bigger. Are most saltwater boats like that?

I wont post my photo because i don't want to take your crown.

Thanks for letting me keep the crown... lol

Nowadays most boats are true in measurement to what the model name is. Cape Horn, Contender, Kencraft and Onslow Bay are a few that would have a 23' model but overall length would be closer to 27'.

Anytime bud, have a place for you to stay as well. Kings will be showing up here soon in good numbers right off the beach and will only get better through the fall. The big Mahi are gone but the bailers are still here. Wahoo is the primary target offshore now and through the fall with some small mahi mixed in.

I know it's a haul for you but my offer is good whenever you get a chance to come down. I'm not a pro by any means, just a dumb ol country boy but we have a lot of fun and catch a few fish at times.

Heck yeah!! Offshore load I get around 1.8-1.9mpg if it's fairly calm. Usually have 3-4 guys fishing so the fuel bill isn't too painful.

You ever get into the tuna out there? Went last year or if jersey to the Hudson canyon long ride but hard you can get on them with a shorter ride to the fishing grounds. Starting to look for a port to put a trip together for maybe 3 days of fishing. Any recommendations for the Carolinas would be great.

We chartered a boat for 3 days in the spring and 2 days in the fall with an overnighter tuna love it but would like to change it up a bit.

    Bluefin or Yellowfin?

Either one you will need to find a charter up in the Outer Banks. We don't get many YF or BF down in this area. Some winters there will be a decent BF bite here but most are caught off Oregon Inlet along with YF in the summer.

Check with the Oregon Inlet fishing center. They have a fleet of excellent charters that can out you on the fish.

Here is a list of their offshore charters. I follow True Grit on FB and he usually puts fish on the deck.
