    Mercury Optimax 115 power loss

I had the boat out this weekend and out of no where the engine lost power. I could only rev the engine to 2,000 rpm's while in gear. Has anyone experienced this issue? Once getting the boat home and connecting the water muffs, the engine will start right away then die, it will stay running if I keep the engine at more than idle. I have ordered new spark plugs and a new fuel filter, waiting for them to arrive. What else should I be checking?

    2008 Mercury Optimax, 115hp. ~130hrs.

Check the compressor. Remove the belt, if you can turn more than 3 times by hand, it is toast. It could be the tracker valve or a dozen other things...

Check your coils, might even be a warranty issue/even a recall.

That doesn't mean all cylinders are at 130 today. Really need to do a compression test. This will also allow you to visually inspect the spark plugs as you pull them. An injector might also be bad, pulse pump could have an issue, air compressor could be bad, bad coil, fuel/water filter could be clogged up.

There are a number of things that can cause the issue you are describing. Honestly, if the motor is still under any kind of warranty best to take it back and have it checked. If it's not something obvious, like a plug, coil, compressor, then let a merc tech figure it out. I wouldn't run it until it's fixed.

Thanks for all the responses, I'm not going to run it until I have it checked by my local shop. I'm afraid of the bill :( lol

I had a 115 optimax that had those symptoms. It turned out to be a coil and it was a know issue in those motors.

Thanks for the info! After I get the new fuel filter installed, I will begin checking the coils.

Can you give more details on what was going on when this happened...speed/RPM's? What did you do after this happened? Did you idle back to ramp? Ever turn engine off then back on?

Mind was doing the same thing.
I put a clear glass filter just before the primer bulb and noticed fuel just sitting.
So I changed the primer bulb and and this solved the problem.

Did you solve your loss of power issue? I am having a similar issue with 2006 115 optimax serial number 1B244684
