The first 202 was not made til 1995. You have a 201 or a 204. There's another thread a bit further down. He thought he had a 94 202...turned out to be a 201.

I would definitely try a different prop. Our boats prefer Tempest Plus. Are you trimming all the way down at take-off?

Maybe your rubber hub is slipping in the prop.

Fat fingers Lea-204. If the hub spins, would it spin all the time or just at take off. seem like it would spin all the time.

Someone should be able to help...Hang on...

Will need prop-to-pad measurement, rpms, etc, etc. Not sure about that prop...

The one's ive spun have slipped and recoverd. Just before the hub spins there is a slip when taking off that will go away as the prop catches the hub again. When you get to that point you better head for the ramp. Thats probably not whats wrong with yours but its something to rule out.

Get rid of the Laser,,and if it is an old rubber hub it will only slip a couple of times before letting go all the way.

Agree that Lazer is old technology, and did not perform well at all on the "new" bigger heavy boats.

Took the laser off and put on the "other" 25p prop-that came with the boat. Its a 4 blade I belive 25p. Came out of the hole fine, but only got to 5400-5500 rpm and 57mph on gps (me, wife, 1/2 tank of fuel and 3 batteries). Looking for a 24p tempest or trophy. How much faster should this boat go?

    Re: prop slip (nova385)

Your best performance will come with a 3 blade Tempest Plus. Probably 25p. Your boat is rated for any V-6, so not going to get optimum speed with a 200...tho should be decent. Also need your prop-to-pad measurement. If I remember, the 204 is very sensitive to weight distribution. Heavier things in rear....

    Re: prop slip (nova385)

I had a friend in TX with a 204 and 200 merc. It was a 60mph boat loaded no matter what we did. He had an 8" plate, 24 tempest worked, and ran 5800 rpms all day. By himself 63-64 was about the best he could do. That 2.5 200 and 204, I believe just don't mix all that well. We gave up and decided it was a low 60's boat with that combo.

Maybe someone with more expertise can chime in and give up a secret to setting these things up.

I will get a 24 tempest- I have not measured the prop-to-pad yet. I dont have a jackplate, but the motor is mounted in the second hole down from the top. The motor bracket is 1'' to 1.5'' above the transom. I will say this boat is night and day difference in ride compared to the tracker I came out of. Turns like its on rails to me. Had 3 people say nice boat on the way to the the ramp.

Before you pay for that tempest see if you can run it. Like the 26, maybe 1:4 are good ones that lift well.

Agree, for sure. Additionally, a jackplate might also help...

Well I got the 24 tempest and got to run it last weekend. Its like I got a new boat. It ran 65 @ 5900. Now I have to put in a water pump, pressure is low at WOT. Going to install that after work today.

The problem with the other prop was the vent holes- pluged all of them and off we go.

Glad you got it running good, 204 is not a fun boat to setup, and you're going good.

Not bad!! I just picked up this same exact boat, also coming from an old bass tracker. Its a 1994 204 DCX with a 1994 Merc XRI 200 2.5. My poor boat is just not setup right at all. It has an old beat-up 26" Predator prop on there with almost no bow lift, and I can only get ~56mph out of it @ 5200ish rpms.

How far below the pad is your propshaft with the 24" tempest setup? This was with no jack plate? Is it OK to run this motor at 5900 RPMS? I read that 5800 is the max...

pmgoffjr -- I've seen you comment several times in various threads on how the 204 hull is hard to setup. You have experience setting this hull up I take it? Do you have any tips or personal experience you could share to help me out (propshaft height, setback, pitch, etc).

The Predator was the prop of the day back in 93-94, but won't hold a candle to a Tempest for lift. For a 2.5 200, a 24 Tempest, if you are very light, you might get by with a 25. The big deal with the 204 is to keep the weight at the cockpt & behind. Don't load down your rod lockers and center box with a lot of weight. It is very sensitive to nose weight.

I have mine 3.5 below the pad- no jack plate. It runs at 5900. runs 65-66 light and 62 loaded. I was surprised it carried the load that well.

I know I am getting a 6"-8" jackplate to help give me more leverage for more bowlift, and I am about to buy an A47 Tempest Plus 24 pitch. I am going to run pretty light: tackle behind the console and maybe 8 rods in the lockers with reels toward the back of the boat.

With a jackplate adding that extra setback, should I still expect 5900ish RPMS with the 24 pitch tempest? Would a 6" jackplate increase or decrease RPMS at all? I wouldn't want to run a 24 pitch if I am going to be over 6K RPMS(or is over 6K RPMS ok? Are there any simple mods to MAKE this ok?)
