1998 201 pro elite leans terrible

    My cousin has a 1998 201 elite.just bought it.He has
been complaining of a lean so i went with him, thinking
he was just experiencing the normal torque.NOT..I drove
it and it sucks.Soon as the front drops on take off it leans
terrible to the left side, the passenger is noticeably lower
then driver.once trimmed above 40mph its pretty level,
if you tuck the motor at all it drops right back down.Makes
rough water tough, left side just beats.what could be causing
    this?I weigh 40lb more then him and don't matter,35mph
or less shrarp left turn and the rub rail is on the water from
    the seat on back.225 johnson,trophy prop 4" below.i even
took EVERYTHING out of the boat and it will do it even with
no passenger but not as bad.Any ideas?ok boat if conditions
allow you to mash gas and trim her out, anything less sucks.

Sounds like the Stratos lean. My 295 does it too. Think it has some to do with the fuel distribution. Mine will do it with 1/2 tank of fuel, its more pronounced.

Really? I have a 96 295 and have never had a leaning problem at all like this, ran several others as well.I would not run this boat.its that annoying. I can trim my motor under
completely on mine and the spray will come out even on both sides at about the front of the rod lockers. His will spray way up front on the left, and comes out under
the seat on driver side, tested in glass flat water.

I have a 1997 282 and it leans to the left exactly like you are describing. Come to think of it now, it seems to do it more when I have a full tank of gas and a passenger. This is the second 282 I have owned and they have both done it. Would a hydrofoil help? I want to think it might have to do with the engine torque....

My 99' does it too. I was thinking it was from having the third battery on that side. Seems like a 52 gallon tank would have a baffle in it to keep it from sloshing around so much. I have been driving it like this for 10 years. I try to hit the trim at the same time I take my hole-shot which negates most of it.

If you feel you boat is balanced pretty close as far as weight of the load goes. This lean in most cases is caused by a small "hook" in the hull that is not noticeable to the naked eye. To a trained eye and a straight edge it can be found easily. Hours of directional block sanding later you will have a blueprinted pad.....and a BIG bill. Some go fast guys will blueprint their pads to pick up a couple or so MPHs. So, with a normal production boat should also see a little gain in MPHs.

So far haven't noticed any lean on mine. Seems to run pretty flat, turns like on a rail.

Motor is too low in the water - try raising it up. Does he have a hydrofoil on by chance? Try coming up to 2.75" below pad

That's a great point. I don't have a jackplate and I bet that it's a motor height issue. At least with mine.

My 201 had the same lean and had a hydrofoil... I took off the foil and the lean is gone...

No foil on it,i raised the motor until it wouldn't hook up
back down until it runs good,no difference in lean at any
height, empty the boat and 1/4 tank gas.there is a small difference
From empty to heavy,i believe it is a hull defect.Even with a small bit
if positive trim it always "falls" on that side when in wakes at med. speed
I have ran several boats, stratos, triton, ranger basshawks and visions
and i have never seen a lean like this where nothing helps.I am going to do some work on
it change some props and see what happens.

My 2004 195 ProXL does the same thing. It is not a problem if I accelerate some and give it some trim it straightens right out. However is rough conditions it can be an issue as the boat will want to dip left.

Stratos lean, many of them do it. Right after holeshot (I actually start trimming up right after I hit the throttle) trim up til it levels off, then if needed trim down to desired running trim. Cruising mine likes 1/2 to 3/4 trim on the gauge sometimes more, depends of which prop Im running. Close to full trim when Im letting her eat!

You know come to think of it my 295 has not done it noticably since I raised the motor some. It has been more pronounced in the past pending the load balance.

Glad to know I'm not alone. I just bought a 1993 280 SF. Been trying to get the nose down and finally trimmed the motor all the way down. The nose is down, but now it leans left. Gonna try trimming it up as others have suggested.

Mine ran great at 3 1/4 below the pad w 6" jackplate and a 24p 4 blade prop. Same with a 24 raker too. Do like e-tec said above and get on the trim as your coming out of the hole to minimize the lean.
