    196 Elite Setup Question

I have a some quick questions on the setup of my 196...

    2001 196 Elite w/ 2001 2.5L 200 Efi
25P Tempest Plus (never worked & no damage)
    8" Jackplate
    Prop shaft 3.75" to pad
Tournament Load = Myself (big boy at 235lbs), wife, 1/2 Tank fuel & full livewell
    GPS 63mph at 5,600 rpm w/ 15psi water pressure
Rooster tail even with cowl top at WOT
    No Chine Walk

When cruising at 4,500rpm, it seems that I can over trim real easy. If I trim up to far, I lose bow lift & have a real high rooster tail. Do I need more cup in my Tempest? Would a 4 blade Trophy work better on this boat, rather than the Tempest, and have more bite?

The only other concern I have is, when the temps hit +100deg, should I have a lower pitch prop on hand? I'm only tuning 5,600 rpm and it's in 40deg water right now. I'm sure I'm going to lose another 200rpm by summertime.

That boat would love a 3.0ltr, it could handle a load better.

I would send the prop to Mark to get some more rpms out of her.

Re: 196 Elite Setup Question (Cheatham200)

Loaded down with 2 people, full livewells, don't sound too bad at 63. My 198 with the 225 pro xs will run 68-70 loaded like that depending on the conditions. That 2.5 llitre 200 has no oooopth on a boat that big....

Re: 196 Elite Setup Question (Mark Wendler)

I use to have a 196 only with a 200 Rude H.O. 3.0 liter/25P tempest. My WOT with an absolute FULL load: 2 guys at 225 and 250, 52 gallons of fuel, and a TON of tackle I would run 63. Thats all at 5950 RPM. Fill the livewells and it would still run 63. I think that your running about what it should be. Only thing you might try is a Fury and maybe a couple more Tempest props of the same pitch. You may have to just come up on the plate a little in the summer heat. I wouldn't go down in prop. The 196 is a decent running boat but would have been better with a 225 rating (then the 198 came along and cured that issue).

These #'s sound about right with that load,if you lose the passenger and empty the wells your looking at 66-67mph. You might get a couple mph out of a B+B on the prop.
As said earlier, that 2.5 just doesn't have enough grunt,I went through the same thing you are with my 03 188/ 200EFI. Mark worked the prop and got me to near 70 mph light load but was still a dog when loaded down.

Re: 196 Elite Setup Question (Blue198)

    03 196 with 03 200 opti.

Best I have seen is 67.8 with one guy, light tackle, 1/4 tank of fuel. 5800 rpm

Usually it is 63-64 with 2 guys, full tackle and 3/4 tank of fuel. 5600-5700 rpm.

I have run a 24 tempest b&b'd by Mark and a 24 Fury with the same results.

the fury handles better in my opinion.

Have your prop tweaked, it's not quite doing what it's capable of.

That's a lot of boat and passengers for a 2.5 motor, prop work and trim extenders might find a mph or two.

    Re: (pmgoffjr)

I never expected so much response and good info! You Guys (and Gals) Rock!!

I see that everyone came to the same conclusion about the 2.5L not having the torque this boat could use. I guess I should have clarified myself better about what I would like to know...

The top speed is fine for me, but its the mid-throttle 4k-4.5k range that I'm trying to fine tune. If I lower the Prop shaft another .5", would that increase my bow lift at mid-throttle? Or, is the bow just to heavy to carry, at that rpm, with the lack of torque from the 2.5L? I do realize that I may lose some top end by doing this. BTW, I am sending my prop to Mark for some tweaking to get the rpm's up. Should I ask for a little extra cup?

Thanks so much for your input...

Try bringing the motor up a tad, see if you have the same H2O psi.

Last time when I moved it up .25", to 3.5", I lost 10psi when I hit some rough water. You could hear the prop surfacing coming off the crest of the rollers. In the calm stuff, it had a real high rooster tail at WOT when fully trimmed up.

    Re: (Champ196guy)

I have the same boat with a small block yamaha, 2.6 liter (built by Hydrotec)with an 8 inch jackplate . I had to drop to a 23 pitch to get the rpms where they need to be and my motor has a phase 2 kit ! I would have Mark repitch to a 24 and add some cup. The boat is bow heavy and it wont lift until you get it moving. The best I can get empty is 65 gps. You are doing good with a full load at 63. My next move is a big block . I have too much tackle in my front storage box, but I bought it to fish. Moving the heavy stuff to the rear will help.

    Re: (SCOTT196)

Hmmm... I have to disagree with the numbers being good. I run the same boat but my difference is a 200 Opti on the back and a 10" jackplate running an unworked Tempest 24p at 3.25" to Pad. Full tourney load (On two separate GPS in the boat) I get 66-67 and alone close to 70 (and have seen 71) My max RPMs is 5500-5600 and I am usally at the 20psi area

My home lake elevation is 1500' which may be a difference and its a reservoir with no current.

I think you can get more... if I move my prop to pad as low as yours is I get a very strong pull to the right and lose a lot of speed so my first take is to try raising that first.

You have the big block on yours. There is a big difference in a small block and big block on a heavy boat like the 196.

    Re: (clanderman)

That 3.0 Opti makes a bunch of difference over the 2.5 EFI.

I know the 198's are very weight sensative,Im assuming the 196's are too? You might try moving all the heavy stuff to the rear compartments, that may help a little with mid range lift.

@Champ196guy, I have the same rig and prop. Would love to bend your ear about my setup. Are you on Facebook or could I text or call you?
