Remote Drain Plug - what do you use for lubricant

Well, I was out for the first few times this year and noticed water in my bilge. This was coming from the remote drain plug as it was not getting pulled tight. Sprayed a little silicone and it works good again. I was wondering if there was a better lube for this application? Thanks

I use mercury 2-4-C lube/grease with Teflon. It has some water resistancy. Seems to stay on the o rings a little longer. I'm betting any old marine bearing grease will work for you.

The problem with most of those is the plug is out of shape where the halves go together. Take it out and file the sides where the halves meet. Do this until the plug turns easily in the hole. Make sure the o ring is removed before you do any filing. You will be a happy person afterwards.
The plug must be removed from the cable to do this.

I use pool lube from amazon you get a good size tube for cheap works great just be sure to clean it every so often because lube works like glue all dirt and debris stick to it, I open my plug to drain my boat if any water is in it and then close it for the ride home once I park my boat i open it for 24hrs and then close it again no issues.

I use old fashioned carmex or chap stick. That's worked very well for me and I don't think it'll eat the rubber O-ring up.

This is crazy we are even talking about this .
For something that is supposed to make life easier so we don't have to bend down under the boat to put in .
We are spending more time messing with it.
My 23 year old screw type on may R93 is still fine no issue.
    It's disgusting.

Wait till you're 80+ and have a Stratos with a stepped hull.

I'll take disgusting p.s. I use KY jelly. and on the plug, occasionally Vaseline Petroleum jelly.

Did you hear the one about the newlyweds that didn't know the difference between putty and KY Jelly?

Newer hulls seem to have that bottom step a little further forward. It's waaaaaay under there compared to an older hull. Learned this going from a 1998 461. A couple impacts to the head from my power pole brackets and I wanted to make a change.

Silicone grease for lube and be sure you feel a little “click” when you turn the switch to close. You should feel the o ring seat. Close it back up once the bilge has drained to keep debris off the plug.
