Re: The ChampioN World – According to Pat Goff (Boat4Life)

I owned a 89 176. The hull design and ride were great. But the damn thing was hollow, like they forgot to spray foam inside the gunnels. I never was quite sure whether it was an oversight/QC issue at the factory or whether they just didn't do it during that time frame. Comments?

That boat was very quick with a GT 150!

    Pat
Wanted to see if remember anything about the 16'8 Python Champion made.
Pat Dunken owned Kindsey Prop Shop at the time. They were one of the
biggest Champion dealers back then. It was in Cape Fair, Mo. Pat took a Python
and Tom Harrids(Bettendorf, Ia) worked over 235 Evinrude with a Billy Seabold
30 pitch blade. They were trying to set a bass boat record that was being held
on Table Rock. Guy named BONES was the driver. I don't remember the exact speeds. Pat had a picture of the boat going threw the traps and you
could see daylight under the hole boat. They were second.

Re: The ChampioN World – According to Pat Goff (pmgoffjr)

The Phython was after the 16'8 was first built. It used the same hull but
had nothing inside. No lockers, no rod box, was not even carpeted.
the inside was shot with some kind of white stuff with black specks in it.
They used this boat because it was much lighter. The driver, Bones weight
was 1/2 what Duncan was. The first high speed run the boat prop walked
and did some damage to the side of the boat. They went back and
bolted the motor to another boat. Went back out with no more problems.
You are right Duncan is one hell of a driver. He taught me how to drive out the
chime walk. This boat might of even scared Duncan a little.

Re: The ChampioN World – According to Pat Goff (Gunnar)... Demo Tape Memories..

Love the stories! What about that demo tape? Is it the same one that uberchamp posted in '07? I love watching those breach stops in that video. Dont have the nuts to try one in my champ, but maybe some day.

Re: The ChampioN World – According to Pat Goff (Gunnar)... Dem ... (noffer)

I think there were several versions over the years, but yes the one pinned on these pages includes none other than Pat G. showing how the breach stop is done. This was before DVD and I recall that Pat had said he lost various versions of the demo tapes in moving... I and others have a DVD copy of the original tape... It's priceless and a lot of fun to watch when you want to get ramped up to get out on the water

Everyone, this was to say the least more than interesting to read. There is so much history here it requires multiple readings to take it all in. Mush I did not know about Champion Boats. Unless I missed it I did not see any mention of the Champion 193 model. As my call-name indicates, I own one and haven't seen any reason to change since purchsaing it new in 2001. As for pure speed, handling and the capability to blow the socks off of a lot of big boys, to me it doesn't get better that.

Would be interested to hear the scoop about my haul design and how it stacks up to the rest.

I've had my 171 since '00, bought it new from Fun & Sun in Cleburne. I have been totally happy with my "little" boat!

In response to the transducer mounting Tips

This is very interesting to me since I will be putting a transducer in my hull shortly. Do you have a favorite brand of fiberglass resin to use? Any idea where I can buy a small amount of it? I did a search on Fiberglass resin and most of the items I found were large containers for big jobs. I don't think I need a gallon of the stuff! Is Polyester Resin the same thing as fiberglass resin? Is the grinding necessary to get the transducer to sit better or does it actually improve the signal? Thanks for the tips, I did buy some quick cure epoxy already that was sold by Lowrance . Glad I didn't try using it yet.

Re: The ChampioN World – According to Pat Goff (97Champ181)

You can get small quantities at a auto supply, little repair kits.

I sand/grind it down to get rid of bumps and make sure it's a nice clean spot to adhere to. Not a lot, but just enough to make it smooth.

Your objective is to eliminate bubbles in the resin, those destroy sonar signals, resin is much thinner than epoxy, and cures much slower, so it gives bubbles a chance to escape before it cures up.

Thanks for the reply Pat. I just bought some fiberglass resin yesterday from Home Depot so i'll give it a try this weekend. BTW, I enjoyed reading all of your Champion boats history posts, very interesting stuff!

Re: The ChampioN World – According to Pat Goff (97Champ181)

I am thinking about buying this. Whats it look like its worth, its only got a 70 on it and he says 18'. Seems way underpowerd. Garage kept, and motor hasnt run in 2 years. I guess it did but its just been sitting. It does crank over.

Re: The ChampioN World – According to Pat Goff (alltogethercleaning)

It dang sure isn't 18' looks like a mean 15.
    70 is for sure underpowered.
It's got some really funky trailer under it.
If you can snag it for $2,500 or so, then sell the motor and put something decent on it, and get a trailer...it would be a cool little boat.

Re: The ChampioN World – According to Pat Goff (legendrick)

As mentioned in the 1st post.... Pat said:

    Legend/Hawk/Cobra/Viper, they all run together.
Here's the scoop, and anything else you hear is just B.S.

John Storie was wanting to start another boat company, but he was locked down in a very strict non compete contract with Champion. He could build a boat, but couldn't build a deep V Wedge hull boat.

So, what he did was splash a Ranger 482, added a turning chine, and increased the lifting strakes, and he had him a boat mold. That was the beginning of the Cobra/Viper boats, and they did the Fisher glass boats there also, same hull.

Storie got runnoft from Cobra, they went flaming down, and he and Bruce Benton started the Hawk boat, same basic mold, same basic boat. '01 came and they didn't have the legs to stay in the race, so that died. The molds were bought and brought to Texas where they started building the legends, then bought again and moved to Midway Ark.
