I'm new to these units as well but if you see them on the water there is a huge difference. Running the standard transducer on a Helix 7 and the HDSi on a 999. Still playing with the settings to get the best picture (and it seems that has as much to do with the water clarity and depth as it does the unit) but it is fun "seeing" what is down there.

WooHoo! I will be getting a Helix 7 then!

I have a 899 si, I'd guess i have the compact transducer. If I do have the compact, can this unit be upgraded to the hd? Thanks

Yes it can; Brian and I both ran the HDSI on ours when we owned them (our 899's).

Thanks, compact is what I have. It's good to know that it could be upgraded.

Is there an adapter that would allow you to use the XT 14 20 HDSI Onix transducer with a Helix unit? Just curious...

Yes, I don't use 800 kHz. It has less coverage.

Just put on the hdsi. It's much better. Except it loses bottom on plane no matter where I set it. Never had that problem with the compact transducer. You can't use a thru hull on a metal bottom correct?

That's very interesting! I'm glad I asked. I had contacted HB recently and asked about doing this upgrade when I buy the Helix 7 SI G2N and was told they didn't believe it would make any difference because the Helix doesn't support 800 khz, but obviously it somehow improves the image quality even with the same 455 khz frequency. Hopefully the improvement is still there or even greater with the CHIRP frequencies.

Wllye, what head unit are you using?

@ wllye -No you can only use an "Alumi Ducer" to shoot thru, I think Wayne has one, but I don't run one.

If you diddle with the HDSI it can get pretty hi speed readings, my rig is slow so I don't have too much problem with one.

When it comes to cSI vs HDSI on 455 KHz....
The proof is in th' puddin' above in post #4:
