Why you want your trailer tires inflated to maximum pressure

The load capacity of the tire changes with inflation pressure. From the manufacturer's web site, here are the capacities of a typical 205-14 trailer tire at various pressures:

    25psi-1170lbs
    30psi-1300lbs
    35psi-1430lbs
    40psi-1530lbs
    45psi-1640lbs
    50psi-1760lbs

A 5psi pressure drop results in a 100lb capacity drop.

Most think the tire is what carries the load... Nope, The air does. Tires that are rated for more air pressure carry a load a lot better. That's why I posted the FAQ post with several tire options for better load ratings.

No doubt. A tire alone is pretty useless without any air pressure.

    USA

I had a friend who worked at a tire dealership back in the 70's and he told me to put a couple of pounds of air pressure over maximum to extend tire life with no wear or control problems. I have done that for 40 years on all my tires ( car, truck, boat trailer ) and he was right.

Yes, you get a little rougher ride but I don't even notice anymore.

Hey Cat , Does that mean if I put 65 psi in the tire the weight load will go up ?? even tho the tire is for 50 psi ?

You can't exceed the sidewall pressure unless the manufacturer tells you to.

Unfortunately, Special Trailer (ST) tires are no longer made in North America and the tires coming out of China are causing all kinds of problems on heavier boat trailers and recreational vehicles.

While Carlisle does make some trailer tires in the US, it's a small portion. Most are Chinese.

I never really knew that they had special tires just for trailers. I have always run the tires of my choice and never had any problems to speak about. May have been lucky.

With a tandem trailer, there are few bad tires. With a single axle, you have to be careful. A trailer tire typically differs mostly because the tread isn't as aggressive since it doesn't have to drive.
