    Gas gauge stopped working

Was running to another spot on the lake and the gas gauge stopped working. The gas gauge is a teleflex. Boat is a Nova Pro-Weld with a 1999 90 horse two stroke motor.

I have access to the sending unit and don't see and missing or damaged wires. Same with the gauge on the dash.
I looked at the back of the gauge and didn't see any damaged wires or any corrosion.

    Any suggestions?

You'll have 3 or 4 leads on your gauge and 2 on your sending unit.

The sending unit has leads that should be labelled S and G for "Sending Unit" and "Ground" The ground should be black and the S might be pink. Short them together, and the gauge should go to full. If it doesn't, there is probably a wiring issue or a bad gauge

The gauge wires will be labelled S, I, G and maybe L. S and G are the same as the sending unit. I is the 12V from the ignition, and L is 12V from the lighting circuit for the bulb in the gauge if it has one.

The next step is to verify that you have 12V between I and G on the back of your gauge. If you don't, you have a problem outside the gauge/sender. If you have 12V there, connect the voltmeter from S to G on the gauge and move the sending unit up and down. You should see voltage ranging from 0-8V or 0-12V as you move it.
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity,
    nothing else matters.

And as an added bonus, I loaned my voltmeter to my brother. Sounds like a run to the 24 wal-mart is in order.

What do you mean by moving the sending unit up and down?

You would have to loosen it from the tank , there is a arm with a float on the end that moves up when tank is full down as gas is used ,

Both the gauge and sending unit are registering when shorting the wires.

It might of just went out. Mine quit working on my Skeeter so I got on eBay and ordered a new one. There should be a number on back of the gauge use that as a reference and you will be able to find one. It works like a champ now!

I'm getting a reading of 7.47 and both the gauge and the sending unit.

Do you have 12V between the purple and black wire on the back of the gauge?

There are 12 volts at the gauge(measured wrong earlier). There are orange, pink, black, and grey.

The gauge pegs to full when the sending unit wires are shorted together?

What do you measure between the black and pink at the back of the gauge? Should be about the same as what you see at the sending unit.

Where does the needle point with the key on and with the key off?

The gauge pegs to full on sending unit when shorted.

ill need to check the voltage on the gauge again.

with the key on and off the the gauge is showing empty.

With the key off- gauge is below E.
With the key on- needle move 1/4 of an in. just below e.

On gauge- orange & black measuring 12.4
    pink & Black measuring 7.48.

Shorting wire causes gauge to go from empty to full.
