If I have to get on the brakes hard the trailer will hopp and tires will squeel, this only happens on a quik stop and just started. Where should I start. It is a 1990 daul axle, brakes on both with a PII.

Have you had brakes serviced recently?
Brakes on one axle locking or both?

If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity,
nothing else matters.
It's probably the shock absorber in the coupler.
Sorry i have been busy in the shop, no recent work has been done, I wasnt able to look while it was happening to tell if bot axles were locking, how, or can I check the shock, or just replace it and see.
I just happened to see this post and although I have a different brand trailer I have had the same issue a while back and it turned out to be air in the brake lines. My trailer also has dual axles and brakes on both axles. I live in Pa and the state law is brakes on all axles if GVW is greater than 3,000 LB. Overkill on my rig. I have one brake now that squeals a bit while turning slowly. I'm having a brake and trailer shop look it over in a few weeks to be sure all rotors and brakes are in good shape.

This is a drum brakes trailer and air in the lines should not cause hopping.
If this were a disc brake trailer we would be concerned with caliper bolts and connection of the brake calipers causing issues.
OK, didn't know it was drums. I had them on my 1991 Astro 18FDX and those also did exactly as the OP described but worse than my disc trailer. The culprit on those drums were the, springs and the wheel cylinder. Full of rust and yuck.

Fortunately this is a drum brake trailer... Or unfortunate for the owner
Considering 3 trailers had the same problem, is there something I should do as a preventative measure?
Caliper bolts are not wheel hopping on stopping, they more simply just fail and that's not good. There is no preventative other than checking the bolts on the calipers for tightness and colored (red) LokTite. If someone pulled the brakes and did not reapply Red LokTite then the bolts probably will, or can, back off.
The reason we don't notice the caliper bolts loosening is we are not driving our trailers inside a cab, listening to every suspect noise. We seldom hear anything on the trailer itself.
This is a drum trailer and likely has a shock in the coupler failed.
