Difference between HPDI and HPDI Series 2?

Looking at a new boat this weekend. It has a 200 Yamaha VMAX HPDI Series 2. I've ran Evinrude all my life, so I got questions about the motor. What's the difference between a regular HPDI and a HPDI Series 2? I heard it was something with the pistons but not sure. And I also heard a 200 VMAX HPDI is really putting out 225hp? Answers and reviews to this motor would be great. And it's 2009 with 75 hours.

They drink a lot of oil. There may be a piston change but the ecu had changed as there are 3. A 16 bit up to 04 then a 16/32 bit then the 32 bit. It makes a big difference in the way the motor runs and it's for the best.
You are going to want the series. Don't think there are putting out 225 hp.

I believe the just upgraded the oil pump to help fight the #1&2 piston failures. 200 is a detuned 225 and the throttle body will only open up to 3/4 throttle. Change the accelerator cam and have the ecu tuned and it is a 225.

The 200 HPDI series 1 is a 2.6 liter block. It does not put out 225 hp. I will assure you of that. The 200 HPDI series 2 is a 3.4 liter block. Much more torque and more power.

    I had a 2005 HPDI 200 and I'm pretty sure it was a 3.3?

I had a 2004 200 HPDI and it was a 2.6 liter. I meant the series two were 3.3 liter. Not 3.4. And I was told by Yamaha rep that the series 2 were the 3.3 liter block. But did not officially receive the series 2 designation till a year or so later. But all 3.3 liter block HPDI engines were series 2 in the 200 HPDI

A little late to the party, but to help clear up some of the '200 HPDI' terminology ........ there were 3 200 HPDI VMax motors.

First was the 2.6L version ....... same as the 150 and 175.
Second was the big block version, the 3.3L bock ...... same as the 225 and 250.
Third was the big block Series 2 version ...... which was a 3.3L as well.

As it was told to me ...... the Series 2 motors were to have a few 'updates' done to them in hopes of keeping the top 2 pistons from blowing.

To help confuse the situation, somewhere around '04 or '05 Yamaha switched block displacement from 2.6L to 3.3L, yet they still called it VZ200 ....... for 'HPDI VMax'.

    Hope this helps someone.

I have had both 2.6 and 3.3 . You dont want the2.6 if you have a heavy hull, it has alot less torque!

Very old thread but I'm looking for some input. I've found a really clean 2008 Ranger with a 200 Yamaha HPDI with 26 hours on the motor. Is there anything in particular I should look for or at? Thanks
