I had a 99' Pro Craft 180 combo with a Merc 150 xr6 clipped on the back and a 6 in T&H jack plate for 6 or 7 years. Tried my best to get 60mph out of it on the gps. Just couldn't find the extra mile an hour. The last season I had it I took EVERYTHING out of it and off it except for the cranking battery and the locater on the dash. Less then a 1/4 tank of gas and 59mph was still tops. That was running a clean 23 tempest plus and pushing the rpms above 6000 and water pressure low, less then 10#s more then 5 #s though. Motor height was moved from 5in below to 2in below in 1/2 inch increments between runs. It was like chasing a unicorn for me to see 60. Finally had enough and threw the towel in. Found my Coral that I now have and just walk past the 60mph mark. The Coral is running a 225 efi with a fairly clean 25 tempest plus and a 8 in detwiler plate. Best I've seen in this boat is 71.8mph on the humminbird gps. Boat was completely empty other then locaters and troller on the front. Don't know the best motor height other then it is 4 on the dial for the hydraulic plate. That's running just over 6000 rpms as well. I haven't been able to try any other wheels on the Coral but I tried a few on the Pro Craft and the 23 Tempest plus was far and away the best for fishing/speed. I tubbed and skied with a 21 Lazer II on the Pro Craft. On the Coral the only prop I have from tubbing/skiing is a 23 Lazer II. Once I get a few extra $$$ I'll try a few different props on the Coral. So, long and short of it, in my opinion after 2 fish and skis the Tempest Plus is the way to go?!?! Although I would love to get my hands on a Mazco HP4 for a weekend and see what happens. Damn...This is hands down my the longest post ever....
Peace,
