1984/83 Evinrude XP 150 (MAYBE VPO)

I am looking at a boat that has a 1983/84 Evinrdue XP 150 and I think its a VPO or VRO. Somthing about a Oiling system that I have heard doesnt work very well?

The seller says it works fine, but if it is a VPO model, do I just disconnect this system and run a pre-Mix?

ANY INFORMATION ON THIS MOTOR/SYSTEM would be a great help.

As you can see I am kind of lost

I have a 88 XP 150 VRO and I havnt had any problems with the VRO system, So I have not disconnected it.. When I rebuild the motor I may think about it but if it's not broke I'll run with it......XP's are good motors..

Re: 1984/83 Evinrude XP 150 (jaqfan)

Here are some pictures of mine. It is an 84 and it has the VRO ( should have a VRO decal on the front of the motor. I disconnected mine only because I haven't spent the money ( approx. $300 ) for the new OMS pump for the most up to date pump. I eventually go back to pre oiling system for convenience sake, no big deal premixing at the station, but kinda a drag on the water If you decide to premix, the red arrow ( hopefully no red X ) shows the cap where the oil line goes on and the blue arrow shows the plug unhooked. I like the motor but it does like the gas IMHO I would not and have never bought a boat just hearing it run on muffs. I have mine on a 17' F/S and can run low 50ish with a 22 Raker depending on the load.

    stickmanc,

    Thanks for the help,

though what would I do, just disconnect it and leave it be?

Also I presume it is a 50:1 Mix when pre-mixing? (knowledge from owning a 10HP Evinrude.)

All the Help is Greatly appreciated, and I will be heading down Tuesday to test it out on the water.

OK on picture #4 to the left there is a yellow plug. When you disconnect the oil line insert the plug into the line an Tie warp. disconnect all wiring to VRO and sensors, tan and black from tank to motor cowl Low oil, and disconnect the plug from the VRO pump. Also install the cap for the oil pick up fitting and tie wrap.

Re: 1984/83 Evinrude XP 150 (stickmanc)

I can understand that. now, the guy told me that he has been running a pre-mix since he got the motor in 1994. So that leads me to think that the VRO is already disconnected. Or the pump just doesnt work when He got it. Any advice there?

I had to blow the picture up some but it does look like the oil inlet is capped off. Check the two lines into the motor the smaller one is the oil line from the tank. He may have plugged it up with something else but that is what the yellow plug is for. You should be in good shape. If you want to put in a new VRO/OMS it is abut $290, and you will have to hook all the stuff up again.

OK, one last thing is. How to Check Compression. He says that it is 110 on each cylinder. So I suppose its good since each cylinder is within 10% of each other.

What tool would I have to buy to check compression?

Compression gauge, gauge readings will vary. If that is so the compression is higher than mine.

    Ditto, higher than mine.

WEll I bought her, the boat checked out and the Engine ran as smooth as silk and the power of a beast. Also its does not have the VRO System. It runs straight Pre-Mix. It seems to be a great motor and I will have fun with the boat.

    Only $2300

Congrats on the boat . After you get a chance to enjoy it, I'd love to see some closer pictures of the motor. So I take it he unhooked the VRO already?
