    lower unit

    I have a 94 evinrude 175 with a new SEI foot, I opened the top port on the foot there was a lot of pressure built up in the foot the oil was black but clean and had a burned smell, is this pressure normal, blew oil all over me

    Was it after a run? Was it stored outside and sitting in the sun?
    No expert, but thinking either situation would cause the scenario u described. I would also think the pressure buildup could be a good indicator that your seals are good and doing what they are supossed to do.

    Possibly you had the foot filled 100% with fluid (you should fill it and then let about 1 oz. drain back out) this allows an air pocket for expansion when the oil gets hot.

    +1 never had oil spit out @ me. Sounds like to much pressure, might be overfilled?

    I have never seen lube fly out of a top vent but I have never taken a screw seal out when the unit was hot either. If you have had more than one unit fail, you should be checking other possible causes like too much or old grease in the motor splines causing the shaft to have downward pressure. Lower unit oil stinks by nature, but is not normally black.
    As previously stated overfilling could cause pressure. I think the proof of failure would be if the lower screw was removed and metal particles came out.

    Possible bad pinion bearing causing pressure to build inside the case.

    This was the same case with mine. I change the LU oil, went out about 4 more times and the gear case blew up! So best to get it checked out now!!!

    Was your lower unit an SEI aftermarket also?

    The only good thing about an SEI lower unit is that it has a 3 year no fault warranty.. and trust me you're going to need it.. I'm about to be on my second SEI lower myself.. Seal failure on the first one and looks like it's going to be the same with this second one.. Only thing it's going to cost me is the one hour of labor for the dealer to install the replacement.. The units are basically cheap china made junk built with subpar parts.. Just not built to last long term if you put many hours on your motor.. When this one gives up the ghost I'll be buying a new Mercury lower..
